Does anyone felt a bit disturbed by the words ' negro day' ?

With the sensitive political correctness in the mainstream media how does this piece slide by without backlash by media police. Especially when the targeted audience is mainly teens or early adults who have a tendency to lash out as angry activists against anything remotely racist. Mystery abounds ...

Considering that, a lil surprising it's still able to be called the United Negro College Fund.

reply

Or that the NAACP is called the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

reply

Exactly. Not that it has to be changed or anything, but considering how ultra PC things can be...

I don't even find the word racist when people say it today. Outdated yes.

What would you have expected them to say in the musical set in the 60s?

Censorship is advertising paid by the government.

Sad how people want to rewrite history. I do not recall ever seeing a single black person on American Bandstand which teens watched daily after school.

reply

Bandstand didn't integrate till the move to ABC-Hollywood from Philiadelphia in the mid 1960's

The concept of a 'Negro Day' should be disturbing. Thd show doesn't shy away from this.

Exactly Harvey, we should only be "disturbed" by a reminder that it existed in such a way. In such a recent time in our history and in the context of many of the chart-topping songs made and sung by black artists.

To another poster, I don't think the 1988 "Hairspray" trivialized the subject matter. Comedies historically touch upon serious social & political topics for their laughs and our education. Musicals do too, "Sound of Music", "South Pacific", Wests Side Story", "Hair" etc.

Did "evil" white men help end segregation? Well I'm pretty sure that we weren't overwhelmed by black, lesbian, trans lawmakers 50 years ago so yes, we'll have to assume that many white Christian males made some correct decisions regarding the advancement of civil rights for all others. The real-life Buddy Dean's show was cancelled rather than integrate. Which reminds me of an excellent article for fans! -
