The Manny??

I guess this was their way of showing what an idiotic role the actor brother was struggling with having to play...... Well, they succeeded, lol...... That show would have been canceled in no time! An always shirtless guy, clueless as hell, wondering if he should try breastfeeding, etc. Doubt that a show like that would have ever made it to air in real life, yet it seemed like a pretty popular show in their world.

Isn't there something similar on ABC? Like 3 men are roommates and someone leaves a baby at their door and hilarity ensues as they try to raise the child? I feel like there are dumb slapstick comedies on nickelodeon, Disney, and abc..aimed at kids and families and The Manny would fit in there. Not Primetime or anything

reply

Sounds like Three Men and a Baby. I think there was a short lived series like that.

LOL 'The Manny' took it to the extreme, but the 'clueless, male, beefcake, housekeeper, & nanny' type concept WAS done 1980s, two shows of which were quite popular. Ever hear of 'Who's The Boss?' or 'Full House'? I'm sure both Tony Danza and John Stamos could sympathize with the character Justin Hartley was playing, both as the sitcom character and the actor behind the scenes who knew he was better (or wanted to be better) than that cheesy sitcom role.

Baby Daddy on Freeform/ABC Family. That's the vibe I got from the fake Manny show.

reply

The Manny would def be on FREEFORM!! lol

reply

I agree. Very reminiscent of Baby Daddy

reply

I could see that comparison, but my first thought was Melissa & Joey which is also on Freeform/ABC Family. Joey's character is literally a male nanny. Not sure if he's supposed to be an idiot or not (never seen much of it), but the concept matches and he does fit the beefed up tight shirt/no shirt appearance.

I was trying to figure out the overall Plot of The Manny, but there are how many TV Networks out there where this show could be popular. And don't forget Netflix, Hulu, Amazon something and even Youtube Red.

reply

Neither Netflix nor Amazon would touch that turd with a 100-yard pole.

reply

Yeah, I can't imagine a show like that being popular today either. In the 80's - sure, but not nowadays.
Also that line of his blaming the audience for crap TV did not ring true - audiences today are savvy and spoiled by quality TV.

reply

Would you consider the Bachelor/ette, Sixtuplets, Duck Dynasty, etc quality?

reply

Obviously not, but come on, if anyone willingly watches that when something like Breaking Bad or Mr Robot is available, that says a lot more about them than the quality of today's television.

reply

Yea, but these programs have been on for a long time now. Yet, some programs that at least I think are quality, we wait with baited breath every May to see if they'll live. All they would have to do is make Manny a "reality" show, & it would be a hit.

reply

I can't relate to that, I've never watched a single reality show.

Well, not entirely true: last year I got into Shark Tank (which I have found pretty informative). But aside from that I am completely uninterested in reality TV as a genre.

You've answered your own comment in the second comment. Yes, idiotic people are out there. Yes, watching stuff like "Sixteen and Pregnant", "Toddlers and Tiaras", "The Bachelorette" and others, says a lot about that audience's IQ. But it doesn't change the fact that the audience exists and that their demand (still staying glued to the screen no matter how stupid the show is) fuels the continued existence of shows like this. There is a show called "Dating Naked" that's exactly what it sounds like. And it's at its 3rd season. Somehow "The Manny" seems quite normal and innocent, compared to this.

I think The Manny rings very true for the poor quality TV we eat up nowadays. You may personally watch some better stuff... But sadly there's a whole other world out there which does not.

reply

The Manny came across as a fictional version of a show like Two and a Half Men.

Ton of "rating success", but also very low-brow and repetitive.

reply

Here's hoping Kevin's next show is more mature but also requires him to be shirtless. LOL

Al - Alicia
An - Andrew
Jo - Joseph
Be - Benjamin

And don't forget Mr. Belvedere. LOL, just kidding, I don't think anybody really wanted to see him shirtless.

reply

The Manny was such nonsense as to not alienate the audience in reality.

But there are a lot of bad shows featuring men raising babies. It's instant comedy!

I think it was a play on the title "The Nanny" - a clueless person with a heart of gold taking care of children... or a child. Personally, I guess I would pick him over Fran Drescher any day - I never could stand her voice.

That's what we need - ridiculous odds, and just a speck of hope that someday, we'll beat it
