When I finish watching season one (I'm a few episodes from the end) is it worth watching the movie? I'm honestly feeling that the premise would work better in a movie than as a series (I feel it started dragging after a few episodes), but if it's the same story there's not much point in watching it, IMO.

Yes, watch the movie. It is great. There are differences between the two but the basic premise is the same.

The concept of investigating a murder in two different time periods is the same. A lot is different. You should see the movie.
