Because of course only the core group would have any interest in opening up the time capsule. It should be a private thing for them, but in reality it would be more of a formal ritual that background, non-speaking characters could attend. But *of course* it's the right year to be opened. And *of course* has perfect things for each of them.

And irritating how they all receive the yearbooks at the end of the episode. I guess not everywhere works the same. But in my own experience we got ours in late summer after graduation. That way, our senior yearbook would include pictures from our own graduation ceremony. The way it happened here, that's an impossibility.
