Feeling sorry for him or not?

For the most part, yes, I felt for the guy, especially when Sydney Leathers turned up on whatever media outlet would have her to milk her 15 minutes of fame to the point of turning up at his election HQ with reporters in tow (natch).

Or when the journalists ask Weiner the same question (about his wife not turning up in public with him in the later stage of his campaign) 7 or 8 times, and then ask 'one more question?'...and then proceed to same godd@mn question as before!

I had to remind myself that Weiner was ultimately the author of his own misfortune.

Posting the photo of his bulging underwear, people could forgive, and indeed it looked like they were going to...but no, he had to send explicit messages to women he just had to know were going to be trouble.

As that one Jewish guy said outside the store after the shouting-match with that one heckler: "Why couldn't he just walk away?"

Which pretty much sums up Weiner to me. Why couldn't he, just, not do what he did...?

When darkness overcomes the heart, Lil' Slugger appears...

Just saw movie. Really enjoyed it.

I sympathized with Weiner. He has personal flaws, like everyone. Unlike most people, I think he was pretty brave to own them and keep going out there. Most people (like me) would have crawled under a rock. But he manages to keep going.

Eventually the world moves past all the personal stuff and they begin to listen to ideas again.

He never denied it like other politicians but boy he just can't help himself can he?

reply

He did deny it in the beginning. It took him awhile to fess up.

Cuz he was horny as fug. Perhaps the most telling line in the movie was about how would call one particular woman 5 times a day for phone sex. This dude has the libido of a jackrabbit in heat. That's tough, maybe impossible, to combat.

I think I'm feeling sorry for us, not him.

I mean, at one point he puts out a somewhat credible theory that what makes him tick as a politician, when combined with quasi-intimacy of social tech, makes this sort of thing inevitable. And if that's true, then we may as well get used to having seriously flawed individuals in public office.

And I do mean flawed. I truly believe that most folks don't email POV's of themselves half (or fully) undressed to anyone, let alone complete strangers. Doing so suggests either youthful naivety (that you'll probably come to regret), or a deranged disconnect from reality. And Weiner's old enough to have know better.

So I thing I'd peg him an interesting specimen of what I hope is an outlier personality type in the world of politics, worthy of study, certainly, but not pity.

We've had "seriously flawed individuals" in public office since 1776. If we're not used to it now, we never will be.

I felt a little sorry for him because he obviously couldn't help himself. He obviously has some kind of issue where he doesn't believe he deserves respect and dignity from the public, and so he constantly betrays himself to get the punishment he feels he deserves. But all this is going on so far under the surface that he can't even articulate why he keeps doing it.

reply

He can't articulate it because I don't think he's qualified to articulate it. He denied having a problem, yet, after losing all that he has, it seems that the smart thing to do is to find out for sure.

He should have just invested in a dominatrix.

I did feel like Leathers didn't do the right thing at all. Right when Weiner started to change, become a better man, have a good campaign she pops up and proudly shares these pictures and her story. In her porn clip she even said "sorry but no sorry"

Why would anyone feel pride in ruining a mans life? I mean - every politician jerks off at some point. Sexting isn't that far away from that. I honestly don't see that as something that would need to be exposed. Sure the new pictures with his kid are ugly, but who knows if those had even happened if Leathers would have just kept quite.

Feeling sorry?

Absolutely NOT. Was he treated 100% fair? Perhaps not, but he is a very flawed personality, LIAR!!

The voter's were correct to reject him, but then they go and vote for that clown deblassio

Excellent post. I agree for the most part. I fcking hate that kunt Sydney Leathers now.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

reply

Not. He could have chosen to quit the sexting and remain a public figure, or continue the sexting and become a private one – or somehow reconcile the two. He chose none of these.
