Androids and Aliens

So episode 2 confirmed that the mustached trannys are androids and Cary name dropped the Shi'ar, which is an alien race from the X-Men comics. At this point I'm inclined to believe that the show takes place in the future of the X-Men universe (possibly closer to our present) and that the retro set/costume design is simply a stylistic resurgence in this universe rather than an indication of time period.
