Totally over-rated

I am a fan of Amir Khan movies. They are not all good but mostly they are different with some message and interesting story like Lagaan, Fanaa, taare zameen par.

But this one just felt flat. It was just another sports movie. The characters are not well developed. We see amir khan acting tough from the start of the movie but no background is provided for his behaviour. The girls simply accept their fate after witnessing a child-marrriage. This could have been developed further.

It felt like director wanted to shorten the screen time on character development and focus on wrestling scenes which is a bad decision. Because they could have been playing any sport (cricket, football, running) but what matters is motivation behind the action of characters which felt lacking.

There was a possibility of this film taking many directions. The struggle of a woman wrestling in india was not well highlighted. We only see again amir khan acting tough and forcing his way into fights which just feels plain stupid. A few remarks by the people witnessing wrestling suggests their disapproval but this was also not explored.

His wife also gives up too easily to his demands(so much for women empowerment) and her character was also not developed.

The acting was good but overall the film lacked substance.

Even Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was better than this one.

Edit:

Thank you all for the responses and healthy discussions. Most of you didn't agree with me. I do understand all the points that u guys are making but overall this movie failed to impress me(maybe because it is mainstream or maybe I had better expectations). I was more taken back when people hailed it as the best indian movie ever on imdb.

Maybe it gets better on second watch. Maybe it doesnt. It is just a movie and not the end of the world.

Keep watching movies and having fun fellow IMDBers.

MS dhoni was one of the most pakau film. Usual melodrama with bad script. Jus good acting n nothing else.
Dangal was awesome. Good script, good cinematography, awesome direction n awesome editing inspite of being more than 2 hours, u dont feel bore.
Terrific acting by aamir. The fights were the best in the history of bollywood.
N last, the transformation by aamir. His sweat n passion paid off ultimately. Inspite of demonetisation n inspite of paid trolls.

How was the script good? It was a predictable sports drama in which, honestly, very little happened to justify the near 3 hour runtime. Several of the characters turned into melodramatic cartoons by the end of the film, such as the nat-lvl coach and the final opponent. The character of Mahavir literally became a parody of himself by the end of the movie.

The acting and cinematography was great, as well as the well coordinated fights. However, that can be said for literally dozens of films. However, what separates great sports films like Raging Bull and Million Dollar Baby from just "good" ones is a tight script that interlaces the all problems the main character is having throughout his/her life to the final fight. The ultimate test that the main character has overcome all of his/her challenges throughout the movie for.

In Dangal, the above was not the case. For the first half of the movie, a gold medal was not the daughter's goal, it was Mahavir's. Then, as Geeta began to lose interest in wrestling the movie began losing interest in the ultimate goal. For the last 40 or so minutes of the movie, the script should have continuously stressed the importance of the final fight instead of wasting time with the politics between Mahavir and the nat-lvl coach, Geeta's weight/ place in the training center, and finally, Mahavir getting locked in the room. The final third of the movie was intended to put immense weight on the final fight, which it failed to do. Unfortunately, Mahavir's short oration to Geeta about woman empowerment's stake in the fight came a little too late. The idiot coach, Mahavir's "capture", and the irrelevant sports commentating all drew away from the final fight.

WOW, I never thought that i would find someone with the EXACT same thoughts. This movie wasn't that good, and I am surprised to see that so many ppl are so easy to Impress and they do not even consider anyone's honest negative opinion.
I am a movie enthusiast, And i Love sports Fictional/biopic movies. but after watching Dangal i FELT EMPTY. there has to be something wrong with it for putting me in that situation.

yea totally overrated if we compare with some classics like Godfather and Unforgiven.

i am not satisfied with ending especially with the last match for GOLD.

Aamir locked in a room and Geeta is fighting. should'ave kept it original.

reply

Well, every movie is overrated, coz its subjective, every movie isn't for everyone

In your review, I feel you're being quick to jump to conclusions on what was missing. And had there been women empowerment, I dont think I would have liked it that much. This film is about women empowerment because despite having no sons a wrestler turns his daughters into...

Anyway you say Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was "even" better as if to say Milkha was a bad film.

I gave Dangal a 9 because in the pit of my stomach an inspired fire was lit. And that adrenaline was outstanding.

Amir Khan did most things right in this film IMO.

But this is far from his best. I enjoyed PK and 3 idiots even more. however, this is the first film of its sort that hes done so I have to praise him.

Come in she said I'll give you shelter from the storm.

I really accept what you are saying but let me point out few points in the movie which I don't like:-
1. When Aamir Khan got locked inside the room during the final match of her daughter, you I found that ending very predictable because I have seen Chariots of Fire. In Chariots of Fire the coach of the protagonist has not gone to see his race because he felt that his student will feel nervous infront of him and will not be able to perform to his best. In the ending he find that his student has won by seeing the flag of england going at the top. That scene was very reasonable. Similar scene was attempted to be created in Dangal, where Aamir got locked in the room, which seems very unnatural. I mean how a coach can do that who is so busy which with her student, that was very cheap bollywood style and seems very irrelevant
2. Fighting Sequences were very similar to cindrella man, where just the boxing was replaced by the wrestling, otherwise the way the camera focusses on the Aamir telling how to attack was very similar to coach of Russel crowe.

I also like his movies and I have to accept your are right. A 7/10 is a good honest score. Totally predictable, especially 1st half!

reply

Totally agree with you sir. It was shockingly over-rated. I did not feel thrill throughout the movie. It was very very average.

I would say, skip Dangal and watch Chak de! India again.

I lost my faith on Oscars when

Sir Hans Zimmer lost for Interstellar...

Ravi ji....u moron it was based on true story...if u google d story u will find everything...chak de india was a fine mve but loosely based on a true story..and u lost faith on Oscars why?? Hans Zimmer is one of d best musician..but Ennio morricone is a veteran and deserve 2 win.

I have not seen Dangal, and won't....especially if it is worse than Chak de India.
I began to watch the Bollywood films filtering in to the top 250, in the hope of something different, but soon came to the conclusion that these films are far too amateurish and cheesy for normal viewing tastes.
My Indian friends begged me to see Drishyam, saying it was better than the others, but one look at the trailer convinced me that it would be the same schlock that Bollywood produces for their less than discerning Hindi audiences.
I will wait for Indian cinema to mature a bit before giving their movies another chance.
