A Show About Family

I don't mean that in a mob way. This show's central conflict is, as far as I can tell, actually about whether or not Marty can keep his family together and get them through it still with love for each other. That's the main threat, I think. The marriage is stressed immediately with Wendy's affair and their general disinterest in each other.

As the show goes forward, their family's jeopardy - not physical, but emotional - are the biggest stakes. Especially with the kids. It's gut-wrenching watching them (Marty and Wendy) try to keep the family physically safe and financially secure while driving wedges between themselves and their children. They can't see the truth here...

Then the side characters are about family ties, too. The Langmores and the Snells, the Navarro Cartel... The conflict with Erin and Helen in Season three...

Come for the money laundering thriller, stay for the family drama.
