Why didn't they publish what was in the Chief's letters?

Everyone was blaming Mildred for his suicide because of the billboards and attacking her but in the letter to his wife the Chief clearly states they had nothing to do with his suicide and everything to do with his cancer. Then his wife goes up to visit Mildred and acts all pissed like it's her fault after she read the letters.

Stupid plot point.

You aren't necessarily gonna believe everything a person writes, especially when they are suicidal.
Plus, when your spouse dies, you won't be at your 100 percent rational best. And even if you dont think it was Mcdormand's fault, you'd still be mad that her for doing that to him in his final days.
