A really nice series but..

I like this show a lot but some parts are not accurate about this era or the people on the island.
I also hate the caging animals part but I think that this couldn't be avoided.

I will also have to agree on the caging of animal’s part did not settle well with me. Having said that again bearing in mind the era that was a done thing.

Caged animals inappropriate in 1935??.....Historical revisionism is so quaint....

My husband and I have really been enjoying this show and we were sorry when the first series finished. We already loved Keeley Hawes as Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty, but in the last episode of the Durrells, we were rather dismayed to see her character seemingly channelling the violent side of Lindsay Denton - slashing poor Sven's accordion, which I thought was a shocking thing to do to an instrument that he obviously loved, and then sneaking around looking into locked drawers at his private things. I don't care what she suspected, I thought her behaviour was terrible, and out of character in comparison to the rest of the show.

Yes, that was a bit shocking for me too! But I think it wanted to portray that we all get frustrated and do things out of character, even those who otherwise have impeccable behavior! We are only humans after all!
All in all, I am not sure if I really liked Mrs. Durrell, I found the other characters more concrete and easier to relate to. :)

Agreed the caging of the animals was a bit hard to watch from our more enlightened eyes, but it has to be said that young Gerry went on to become the famous Gerald Durrell, "father" of conservation. He established Durrell Wildlife Park, a zoological park on the island of Jersey in the English Channel, in which for decades endangered fauna was...and still is...protected and bred. He travelled the world, discovering and collecting rare critters, and taking many back to his zoo to breed. He also wrote heaps of very enjoyable books about his travels and work...and I think I read all of them many years ago! So although young Gerry may have been a little thoughtless about his treatment of the creatures he collected as a kid, he more than paid Mother Nature back in his life's work. 😃

As for some parts of the tele-series not being accurate to the era, I'd be interested to know what you found to be inaccurate, Nastasia_g8.

it is totally inaccurate in every way. A very bad adaptation of a wonderful book.
