Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I was absolutely shocked that Ali was nominated for a Golden Globe... not denying he's a good actor but the guy is in the film for about 4 mins total. I read about all his nominations and the hype and I kept expecting him to turn up in later scenes. In my opinion the teenage Chiron and the older Chiron conveyed so many more complex emotions. Thoughts?

In this supporting actor category the award should go to Dev Patel for Lion - absolutely way more moving.

He doesn't deserve the hype, because it's such a small performance, but it's a really good one, and massively refreshing to see something of that nature gaining the traction that it is. It's just a shame all of the awards will inevitably warp peoples expectations going in.

I actually think he kind of stole the movie. Like someone said, lit up the screen in every scene he was in. Very natural and touching, had really gotten under the skin of his character. A great supporting role.

I've just watched the film (I'm in Europe and the release is very limited) and this is what shocks me most. That late into the award season, with all the praise MA has received and how offended many people were by the alleged "snub" when he lost at the Golden Globes, I was expecting so much more from him in this role. I'm not saying I didn't like it. I did. It's a good role and he did a good job, but with all the hype it does turn out to be underwhelming. A few weeks back when I watched Manchester by the Sea, I wasn't sure Michelle Williams had enough material to play to make it worth all these nominations, but this is even more surprising.

I don't think he was in it long enough to win any awards. He did give a good performance but he, like many others, didn't really say that much.
