I really wanted to like this movie....

but I didn't. Was disappointed. Thought I would laugh more.

and that's what I loved about it.

It wasn't a comedy, it was more of a drama.

The cast crushed both sides of it, I never heard of this movie until I saw the poster for it at my local indie theater (wife and I were seeing Ab Fab).

Fans of Community and Key and Peele, I can't recommend this enough.

It was a serious drama about the trials and tribulations of being an improv performer in Manhattan. I could not believe how seriously this movie took itself. I was rolling my eyes the entire time. I am glad there are other people out there who managed to feel invested in these characters and their "problems," but I was in constant shock that this movie was so heavy about issues such as, "Will my successful friend submit my writing packet to a TV show?"

Your entire comment is more about you than about the movie. I guess you're "that guy" who posts something lame, hoping (and failing) trying to generate a lively discussion that validates his own inability to appreciate a film.

All I did was watch the trailer and I was able to see that this wasn't really a comedy but more a movie that gives you an inside look into this world while also making you smile. Maybe you should stick to stuff that's more mainstream?

We get it bud, you're an *beep*

Not appreciating a film is a perfectly valid reaction. There's no obligation to like it, and no reason not to say so if you didn't. It's funny when people on message boards get offended and cranky when another poster doesn't like a movie they liked.

reply

Not to be petty, but I want to like every movie I go to.

Thank you, Julius. I agree. Nothing wrong with wanting to like the movie. And, I thought, perhaps, a movie about an Improv Group might be a little funnier than it was.

Maybe the reason you didn't think the movie was funny was because the movie wasn't trying to be? I get that you didn't like the Improv comedy, I myself found it charming but not really funny but its also why I enjoyed the movie a lot. It doesn't use comedy to pander to the audience like most films (meaning no one makes a joke or does something laughable to get a rise out of the audience). Not understanding why their improv is funny is like not understanding an art form. I don't say that to insult you since improv caters to a particular demographic and seeing the film its understandable why its not more mainstream.

The comedic lines the characters had felt real whether you thought they were funny or not. Its because they act and say things like normal (improv) people. Its unfair to compare this to Hollywood comedies like Hangover or Pineapple Express and even the more grounded ones like 50/50 or Pitch Perfect because those characters and situations would never exist in real life. I wouldn't even call this movie a comedy, I saw it as a drama about comedic people (again i say comedic to the degree of what the characters saw themselves as not whether you thought they were actually funny).

I'm not saying you are wrong for disliking the movie but I am suggesting that maybe your expectation of what the movie should've been goes against what the movie was trying to be.

I didn't care if it was funny or not, but I really didn't like the movie at all. The whole thing felt forced and I found none of the characters likable or someone to root for. My friend I saw it with felt the same way. Gotta admit I was shocked when I read how positive the reviews were when I got home. Oh well, everyone has a right to their opinion.

I thought it was like watching the soap Friends but with unlikable egotistical characters. Essentially what alot of actors/actresses are like in real life! A good example of fake friends.
