Can anyone make sense of what exactly was wrong with the infected? They obviously had a superior sense of smell, as it appeared to be blood they were attracted to, as well as human scent which is why the main actress always wore mud. And how was the infection spread? Is it transmitted through blood alone from the infected?

The reports said it was a virus so I assumed through blood. I wondered about breath too because they wore the masks but I think that was more about the smell.
