People not getting it

I think most people are missing the point of this. It's an homage/parody of celebrity Christmas specials done in decades past (the Bill Murray/Chris Rock skit is an obvious take on the Bing Crosby/David Bowie special). It's not supposed to be classic, silly Bill Murray stuff... which is actually what I was expecting when I started watching this. But I quickly realized that it was something else and enjoyed it for what it is. Please tell me I'm not alone in that.
The only criticism I have is what others have mentioned; why are some portrayed as themselves while others are acting as fictional characters?

It still sucked.

It started off in a deconstructionist manner, particularly with Murray's moaning over the Golden Globes footage.

But after the Schwartzman segment, it devolved into your typical ABC star-studded holiday spectacular fodder. Shame, I wanted to like it.

I get it: it was supposed to be bad. Very hip, eh?

Stop trying explain/defend art to philistines. It is their loss. Enjoyed it and the musical numbers were excellent.

You got one thing I haven't seen one reviewer mention. This is like a Christmas special from my youth. The ones that died out (except for certain country and christian niches, ick) in the mid 80s timetime. Live satellite feed? Celebrities singing? And Bill is acting like some generalized singer/actor celebrity, who does this sort of thing all the time.

The next best example of this — a parody/anti holiday special - is sometime totally insane like Pee Wee's Christmas Special, and it was much, much closer to the proper timeframe so was more obvious (it's on Netflix. DO check it out!) AVMC did this other riff on it with almost no actual celebrities, but it's the same parody niche.

I didn't love this, but it worked well enough and I did get where they were going.

Clearly, it is a Christmas special for the rest of us. Perfect for sitting around the pole and airing grievances. F'ing brilliant!

I have no idea what those christmas specials are that you talk about. I've never seen any christmas special of any kind nor do I have any particular interest in it. And yet, I say A Very Murray Christmas on Netflix and it moved me. I didn't see it as a parody on anything as most of it wasn't really funny. I liked the story behind it because I, just like millions of other people am quite lonely and I felt Murray's loneliness. I loved the fact that, for the most part at least, all the actors sang live with warts and all. It just makes it that more real and emotional. I especially liked that it showed the sad side of christmas and the good side of christmas at the same time. It made me feel lonely, understood, hopeful and happy all at the same time.

I got it right away. And I do apologize if this is not the proper way to ask my question. Murray asks the engaged couple to remember that exact moment when they knew and to sing about it. Anyone know the name of that song? This is so my husband and I and I would love to find the song. I checked all of he songs on the credits and this was not one of them. Thanks for the help.

reply

The song is I Saw The Light by Todd Rundgren.
