Hiring strange people to take care of children

So... Why is this such a thing on the US?

I would never trust my child to a stranger that i've never met or know anything about... And i don't see that much around here (Europe) to...

I know. Is it like really THAT important of an event that you need to go to? Especially since you chose to have 3 children in a place where you have no friends or family? What are people thinking???

People also have kids and have important events in the rest of the world... And i don't see them hiring complete strangers to go to their place and take care of their children. I'm a parent, my parents are 200km's away. My wife parents are 150km away... I have 0 family here.. But we have friends. Everybody has friends or a neighbor or someone they know that wouldn't mind taking care of your children for a few hours. I could understand if it was the exception, but not the rule.

Nannies perhaps? Au Pairs?? Babysitting isn't really a new or American thing.

I didn't said it was new... But from what i see, North Americans have it... More "hardcore"! lol Hiring unknown persons to take care of their children. One thing is having a regular nannie that is a known person, a friend, neighbor, or even a professional... Another thing is giving access to your house and your kids to a complete 100% stranger...

My point is that other than an interview and references, most child care workers are strangers to start. How many people take their children to day cares or day homes? "Anna" was recommended to them from someone they knew. Besides, family members hurt children far more than strangers, statistically speaking.

The US is enormous. It easily happens that people move two thousand miles away from their hometowns, because of a job or promotion or change of career. Many Americans may live around their original family and friends, but many if not more live a very very long way from them. It's completely normal to have to find a babysitter from among people like a neighbor's teenage daughter, or a recommendation from another parent, etc.
