It suggests a stunted development in the older person and an absent father or mother in the younger person.

(A year or two younger on the younger person and I'd kinda be like, "Yeah, that's maybe a little weird..." I know it seems arbitrary to declare that it's okay at a certain number, but that's what everyone does--determine when somebody is a mature enough adult to go out with whomever they like. There's no magic age at which you receive an official signal from Mother Nature going, "You may now date if you wish." "You may now date someone [x] many years older than you if you wish.")

Well, I'm 29 now, but that preference has been the case since forever...not creepy; of course I wouldn't have actually, y'know, gone out with anyone prior to an appropriate dating age. And I'm sure my parents wouldn't have been okay with it being a much older adult until I was beyond really needing their approval/permission. But, anyway, basic point was that, 20 or 30 or 40 or whatever...for many people age is all but irrelevant. It's simply about the individual person and the connection. I find no reason to think of such relationships as "creepy" at all. That was all I meant.

I believe it depends on the individuals in the relationship.
I've met 20 year olds who still do what their parents tell them to do, look young and act very immature/child-like. So obviously this kinda person seeing a 40 year old would raise alarm bells.
Contrasting that I've met 20 year olds that looked older and acted way beyond their years. They'd lived in multiple countries, travelled the world and were completely independent. It's usually this bunch that were dating much older guys/girls.
James Franco doing comedy in general is way more disturbing than the age difference between the characters here 
Franco is 37-38 in this film not 40. The daughter is 21-22. That is not a 20 year age difference. That is only 16. Franco looks much younger than 37 as well.

Girls mature much faster than men, starting in grade school and it never ends. Women are often more attracted to experience and intellectualism whereas men are more visual creatures. It not only works, it makes a lot of sense. Both parties have higher satisfaction. The only ones who get really pissed about it are women in their 40's.

Other than the small details around the eyes, men are not very different at 45 than 25. Just more stable with more means and able to do more things in life. As of this moment, I'm 44 and my girlfriend is 33. The girl before her was 26 and we dated for a little over a year. I was 40 then.
