Cancelled already...

That was fast...

You could see this coming before it even aired.

Didn't even get a chance to get into the show. My God, at least give it a full season to get people into it and talk to others about it and build ratings from there. Knew it was coming, so didn't even bother watching episode 2 yet. It's on my DVR but might as well delete it now I guess. Was really looking forward to this.

I don't know this to be a fact, but I suspect the network cancelled it because so many people were complaining about the liberties the writers took with the Biblical narrative, and there were a LOT of liberties.

I had no trouble with Saul's portrayal but I have no idea where they got the character they identified as David. He bore no resemblance to the David described in the scriptures. And the palace and countrysides were littered with fictitious characters created out of whole cloth just to flesh out an admittedly thin story.

The writers seemed to be determined to turn the story of Saul and David into The Godfather with swords and sandals. Think about the similarities.

Yes, you are right - it did. But I don't know that the networks care so much any more about that. The show just wasn't very good.

If it is true the networks don't much care about staying close to the source material, this experience should indicate that maybe they should care.

Roma Downey and her husband Mark Burnett had a huge hit with A.D. The Bible Continues just a year or so ago, and they stayed very close to their source material. They made the Bible come to life for this viewer.

This tells me that most TV viewers who enjoy seeing Bible stories made into movies and TV programs DO NOT enjoy seeing the stories and characters fictionalized to the extent that Of Kings and Prophets did it. I include myself in that generalization.

I still think Of Kings and Prophets was just The Godfather and The Sopranos in togas with swords and sandals.

Aside from a little added court intrigue the approach was pretty conservative. All Bible and most historical movies in general add fictitious subplots.

.....The Godfather with swords and sandals.

Now I like it even more, but still can't see the rest of the episodes they made!

reply

Wow, still haven't watched the 2nd episode, thinking I had a little time. Wonder what ABC's hurry is. Makes no sense to end a show that quick with so many episodes already filmed. Not sure if I should even watch it now.

reply

Yes, you should. At least David being anointed king is more of an ending.

Maybe it's because I'm an atheist but i really enjoyed it. I love these types of shows Atlantis, tudors, camelot, & etc. This show wasn't bad. Shucks only 2 episodes aired not enough time to even properly judge it. I hope hulu buys the other episodes.

I wanted to watch the david vs goliath episode. I hope it gets up online or something.

What does that have anything to do with my post..?!

some parental christian board was upset that they didn't sugar coat it and make it family friendly, 90% of the bible is not family friendly.

Yeah I suspect some kind of politics took place here also. Most shows usually run about 5 episodes before they are cancelled. Plus the ratings weren't that lower than the shows that came before it, in the end, networks simply need to cover airspace that reruns can't always handle. No wonder they're in 3rd place now.

reply

That's true, especially of the Old Testament. I read the Bible to my sons (7 and 5) every night before bedtime. When we get to some parts in the OT, I have to sort of skip over parts because I don't think they are ready for the subject matter. Or I substitute a concept and say "He was mean to her" instead of "He raped her."

It tried to be too much like Game of Thrones with a biblical skin.

Hopefully they will do like Wicked City and air the remaining episode on Hulu or on the ABC website.
