What is the target audience of this show?

All those jokes just seem to be going for shock value with the trashy sex humor. Can that appeal to anyone else beyond adolescent boys?

Whatever happened to creative comedies with likable characters like Family Ties or According To Jim?

Hey Crime,

When you see a show like this (and there certainly are a lot of crass shows like it), look at who is responsible for creating and writing these shows. More often than not, the folks behind the show are little more than adolescent boys (and girls) who have barely, if at all, outgrown their bathroom humor days. Their target audience is themselves.

In my youthful days, boys were more likely to be that way than girls, but today it seems girls are just as likely to be as trashy as the boys. Sadly, this seems to be the future of our society.

My wife and I have four grandchildren, one gal and three boys ranging in age from 21 down to 15, three in college and one still in high school. All have very good grades in school and are reasonably good kids, but they are all so much different than we at that age. Who knows, perhaps one of my grandchildren will be creating and producing a TV show before long, and I will most likely think it is trash also.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

You're right. I've noticed a trend in general the last few years where all the shows go out of their way to glorify casual sex or adultery while making light of the consequences.

They never show how adultery affects the children of marriages that are destroyed by it, or how much it hurts the spouse who has been wronged.

They never show the STDs or psychological damage that can come from casual sex.

I guess this show has the pregnancy be the consequence but they just make it into comedy material.

Sex and relationships can be beautiful things but shows like this just serve to make everything seem so cheap and shallow and meaningless. Characters on these shows live such meaningless, selfish lives. I really hope it's not a reflection of reality.

You might want to look into Disney, Hallmark or Nickelodeon channels. Comedy passed up the family sitcom 20 years ago after Roseanne.

The "target audience" is made up of intelligent people who appreciate a comedy with multidimensional characters, characters who are the antithesis of the cookie-cutter people who inhabit traditional sitcoms written by untalented hacks who understand nothing about real human beings. The audience is also expected to appreciate the fact that the dialogue is not composed of cliched snappy patter in the outmoded set-up, punch-line style of derivative nonsense that infests network television in this country.

Simply put, this show is not for you.

This show probably isn't for OP, or David, or a whole lot of other people if the scant 1200 reviews are any indication, but that doesn't mean that it's a quality series that only the self-proclaimed evolved viewers can appreciate.

Someone else on this board said they thought Catastrophe seemed like it could be made in America. I'm assuming America doesn't export drivel like "According to Jim" or "Family Values." America has a long and checkered history of insipid sitcoms.

reply

Family Ties, not Family Values.

reply

I would say the target audience would be adults that have experienced some life.

Wow. I really didn't think anyone liked the characters in According to Jim, especially Jim. So obnoxious. Family Ties had likable characters though, I will give you that.

I'm a woman in my thirties and I really like the show. I find both of the main characters likable, I could see myself being friends with both ot them. The minor characters are not very likable, which doesn't bother me at all since they are all very funny.

But I guess this isn't the show for you, although I don't agree that this show only has shock value or trashy sex humor. Especially not ep 4 (this is how far I have watched), which deals with some really heavy issues, like the fear of having a baby with a disability in an intelligent and honest way. Great show in my opinion.

Me.

Maybe me? I'm 42 and love this show.

reply

I assume the target audience is people who like laughing.
