Am I the only one that thinks Josh Lucus and Kevin Costner play two different characters?

I get the death of his wife may have hardened him.

But Josh Lucas as John Dutton had a calm demeanor.

Kevin Costner plays him as someone who's never had a day of kindness in his life.

I get that as a rancher, especially one that owns so much land you have to be though, but I don't think we yet know what made him that way.

He is playing the same character to me. He was quick to yell at Jamie for not handling the cow right, he was kind of mean with Beth when he found her, and he already had Jamie's future decided without consulting him first. He was even tough with Rip. This is why Beth didn't go to him when she got pregnant. She was afraid of him. Afraid what he would do to her and to Rip.
