Does Meryl do her own singning?

Just wonder. Meryl can sing, but can she sing bad opera?

reply

Bbethany7 No. They captured an Orangutan in Malasia who was used for the scenes where Florence's vocalizings
are just awful, if not awesome. Meryl coached the creature for weeks in order to make him plausibly her.

reply

Yes, and Simon does his own piano playing...

reply

She does her own singing badly, deliberately.

It's that man again!!

reply

Yes she does and she has a fabulous voice. To hit the notes she does in the film, even though they are the wrong ones, she has to be able to sing well in the first place.

When I first saw the movie and heard her singing the Queen of the Night air, I was actually undecided it if was her or they'd used a recording of the real Florence (although I imagined that Meryl wouldn't be dubbed). Definitely one of the most monstrous displays of talent you could ever witness.

Having recently listened again to the real Florence's performance, I possibly perceived a slight difference between her way of singing the air and Meryl's: it's even worse. A truly surreal experience.

It was a remarkable performance by MS. I mentioned in a previous post that to reach those high notes, even though out of tune, she would have to be able to sing, and she certainly can without a doubt.

reply

Yea. That's what makes he performance so good. She actually did all the singing.

reply

@SanneDK: She can sing it better than you can spell.

I've read that Streep is a classically trained soprano, and I've seen her in most of the singing roles she has taken on. She is obviously esteemed as a singer in Hollywood...she played the Witch in Into the Woods and the lead in Mama Mia.

That aside, I've never been a great fan of her singing voice. I was particularly underwhelmed with Into the Woods, where the character she played was originated on Broadway by the truly wonderful Bernadette Peters, who sang the role so much better.

I think we have established by now that there isn't anything that Meryl Streep can't do.
