Why Asian?

I mean the main synth we meet as the quiet subservient house slave is a pretty Asian lady. Is the show feeding on the submissive Asian housewife stereotype? Would we have felt differently if Anita was white or black? The two white lady synths is a sex-doll murderer and an abusive matronly care worker yet the Asian one is the good housekeeper.

Or is it just observing it, making it part of its storytelling and putting it up for debate. Synth are artificial people. So most likely they would get chosen the way really shallow movies would get cast. Have a look at dolls for girls, you get the same parade of tropes.

reply

Not complicated, relax.

If the series goes, the Synths will have to look the same from season-to-season. They can't gain weight, get wrinkles, lose their hair or turn grey, or all the other things that happen to the rest of us.

Gemma Chan is 33 as of this writing. She looks young, but could be any age. Could easily go 10 years with this series and look the same. Same with the two African-Americans (I know, they are British, that was a joke for all the Anglophiles, so again, relax). Black don't crack, so they will age well, too. Same with the dude with the beard, the beard can be dyed and hide wrinkles/jowls/etc.

It could be acknowledgement of Japan's long history with clockwork puppets and robots. When the first clockwork mechanisms from China and Europe arrived in Japan they built robots from them at least 400 years ago.

That's a good question. Another good question is : wouldn't it ALSO be racist to NOT cast her just because she's Asian ? ^^ Once you have the race factor in mind instead of considering the character independently of its skin color, it never ends.

They copied all races and even some names from the Swedish series Real Humans (Akta Manniskor), and since Sweden has a lot of immigrants they like to show that they are integrated and everywhere.

I think you're looking too hard for racist motivations, friend. We have seen synths in all kinds of jobs, and all kinds of "colors" (they don't have races, they are synthetic). If ALL the house synths were Asian women, you would have a point but since it's not the case, why look for racism where there is none?

She's an amazing actress (totally unknown to me before this) and turned out one of the best performances of the year in the part last season. Who cares if she is Asian, white or Alien?

To an SJW, every depiction is racist and all humor is thinly veiled aggression towards women.
