Why Asian?

I mean the main synth we meet as the quiet subservient house slave is a pretty Asian lady. Is the show feeding on the submissive Asian housewife stereotype? Would we have felt differently if Anita was white or black? The two white lady synths is a sex-doll murderer and an abusive matronly care worker yet the Asian one is the good housekeeper.

Or perhaps the intention was to be inclusive of a diversity of races ? She wasn't just a good housekeeper, she gave good advice to the mother and father, appeared to be the matriach for her group of advanced synths, and looked set to kick the daughters a*se early in the serier when she levelled the air rifle at her ...

The Oriental synth was hott!!

reply

Asian! Its 2016 for crying out loud. What hole did you crawl out of?

I recently read an article about an Asian woman who would get furious at her father because he called himself and his favorite restaurant Oriental. She realized he and other older people used the term in a non-derogatory way and that she needed to come to terms with that fact. PC or not, not everyone is trying to insult.

reply

She probably is a superior Chinese and does not want to be tagged with the others.

You might be onto something.... A white, blonde female as the violent one. A black preacher leading one of the speeches at a hate rally, a black male as the most humane synth.

Seriously though, there are obvious parallels with the immigration debate on some levels, but I think the casting is more to make it ethnically balanced.

reply

Or maybe the director liked Gemma's audition and thought she was perfect for the part.

It's a stereotype for a reason.

Japan is currently the world-leader in simulated human life dolls. They are also the world leaders in robotics. it stands to reason they will also be the world leaders in Synth technology and manufacture.

Yeah and why is the husband ginger?
Doesn't matter does it?
Your post says more about you than the series creators.

In truth I had the same reaction as the OP, particularly when I saw that the original Swedish version cast an asian actress for the main part too. It IS slightly problematic, BUT I do think Gemma was fantastic as Anita and really stole the show, and the fact that the story basically all about how she isn't just a subservient asian doll but a conscious being in her own right.. i mean I understand where you're coming from but by the end of it I managed to come to terms with it.

Also, I was really really happy that there was not one but TWO black actors cast in totally non stereotypical main roles. I think this show is doing really well diversity-wise when you compare it to other major shows on similar networks.

reply

Yeah, because they're are apparently no people of Indian and middle Eastern origin in UK, only white, black and Asian, it was a bit odd to have two black guys on team

Though i don't really care, next time will someone ask for sentient gay synth

reply

Tho not a synth, they did have an Indian guy on the show in the first few episodes. His name is the first to appear in the opening credits (not sure why since he's not a major character).
