Question about Bob

Why did Bob want to possess Laura Palmer? Why did it have to be her? He was so frustrated he couldn't possess her at the last minute, because she put on the owl ring, so he goes and kills her in a frenzy. So why did it have to be Laura? What was he aiming for?
