what was that huge hairy costume all about?

Is this a Romanian version of a Wookiee? Why do they make those? Is there some kind of tradition about this? Did someone say it's actually Bulgarian in origin?

I haven't seen the film yet, so I can't speak to its use there (looking forward to watching it eventually, though). To the best of my knowledge it is a Bulgarian Kuker costume. Traditionally men would put on such costumes and walk/dance through towns or villages in order to ward off evil spirits and bring health and a plentiful harvest to the community during the year.

You can check out the Wikipedia page for more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kukeri

Hey, thanks a lot!

Here's a photo of it from the film:

My grandfather was born and lived half his life in Hungary. He used to speak of something like that, but called it a "buboosh". Wonder if there could be any connection...

You're welcome :)

From the photo it looks about right.

I don't know about Hungary, but it's relatively close. I suppose there are similar customs all over the broader region, so there could be a loose connection.

The costume was actually the first thing that put this film on my radar, and it looks very interesting. I hope I can still catch a cinema showing of it somewhere.

Also, reading Wikipedia, it seems one name for it is babushar, which is pretty close!

Perhaps my grandfather ran into a Romanian when in the army and heard about it.

The film is one of the stranger ones around, but worth it if you stick with it, and can see its humor. Hope you enjoy!
