Reasons why future DBZ films/ova's/anime won't work anymore...

This movie (haven't seen the previous one yet where Beerus is the main villain) has shown me many things, but I'll only list one or a few here.

This series should remain untouched. They can make videogames if they like, but the magic of DBZ ova's or movies is gone, especially if they try to make it in continuity with the main series.

While this movie wasn't all that bad (the plot being Freeza's back), it just doesn't have that Freeza feel. I don't know how to put it in words.

No sense of peril, no suspense, no despair feel. No, all gone. Even as Freeza powered up in his new gold form, Goku was enjoying the fight and Vegeta toyed with him. It's like they don't even have to try anymore. They're too powerful. Sure, Freeza was at some point more powerful than the Super Saiyan God SS, but you as the watcher don't feel the hopelessness you would have back in 1989, in my case, reruns 1997-2002. Watch the Freeza saga, the Cell games, Majin Buu saga. Those were the golden years. Even some of the movies managed to capture that magic (Broly first movie, Bojack movie, Janemba movie, Hildegarn movie). That magic where the hero is in despair as he has no way of beating his opponent. He really has to overcome his opponent, many times by way of unlocking a higher potential, or new transformations. DBZ ended well and they should leave it at that.

(Even DBGT had it's moments. Remember when Goku's Super Saiyan 3 transformation failed? or when Bebi-Vegeta defeated Goku and assembled the Saiyans powers?)

My point: The movie itself is not bad. Watch it and enjoy it. But, that Dragon Ball feel we dbz veterans are looking for, just don't look for it. It's gone and ended with the last episode of Dragon Ball Z: Doragon bôru zetto (1989)

goku was in base form and frieza in his 4d form. And goku toyed with him.

That's what I mean. No sense of peril there. Goku was stronger than Freeza the whole movie. Why not give Goku and Vegeta a new villain who is too strong for them. And a true villain, evil. Not neutral like Beerus. The villain has to make them lose all hope. Despair. Like Cell and Freeza did in their respected sagas.

Broly should be revived and learn to transform into LSSGSS!!!

I actually thought bringing king piccolo and somehow give him a power boost

Good idea. I'll comment on this in this thread: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3819668/board/thread/245915743

Great idea. Piccolo is left behind as a primary chacacter since the beginning of the boo saga and that piss me off. its time for him to return as a powerfull character equaling the super saiyan god super saiyan power. gohan should have a dramatical role in this and return to his protagonical role lost after he become mystic/ultimate gohan.

reply

they didn't bring someone stronger because the point was to show how someone weaker can defeat Goku because he gets too confident and the same with Vegeta.

reply

I disagree, you don't want the same old villain recycled with different names you need some different type of villain. Beerus got bored and fought Vegeta and Goku not so much as a villainb ut still a foe whereas Frieza wanted to dominate the galaxy. Like every other villain (or most of them)

reply

If you're not happy with that don't watch them. I think many people are still going to see what's next.

i agree with everything you wrote.

read my post Dragon Ball Saga RIP and you'll see it's just not you.

Main culprit of new DB failing --> Akira Toriyama and his lazy writing

Freeza became a joke, a bad joke so.. that's about it for Freeza.

Give us a movie about Cell, now that's a villain you don't fúck around with!

I admit I have been a little disappointed. Battle of the Gods and Resurrection of Frieza were good, but they seem to lack something past movies/sagas had.

While I agree with your points, I feel like these movies are more in the spirit of Dragon Ball - where it's not about the stakes, it's about the journey. They just happen to be using the super-powered fights from Dragon Ball Z.

Anyways, i'm curious as to what Dragon Ball Super consists of so far. What tone have they been going with? I haven't watched any episodes (since I don't like the Japanese voices) but I'm curious.

^This, you hit it right on the head, and I have no problem with the humor of Dragon Ball and the action of Dragon Ball Z being together, it makes these films really fun.

reply

Ahhh, that may be it then. You can tell there's a different mood than Z proper with all the humor and such.

As Whis correctly pointed out, Goku and Vegeta still have weaknesses tied to their personalities.

Vegeta doesn't relax, and Goku is overconfident leading to guard drops. And neither of them work together, or fight as fast as Whis can.

Sooner or later, they'll meet an enemy who can exploit this.
