Shot like a video game

This was horrible to watch. And unfortunately I don't mean because it took place in a concentration camp. The way it was shot, it was like a video game, with the camera always in the back following the character everywhere.

Simply atrocious. This isn't cinema, just lazy filmmaking and tailor-made garbage for modern audience who watch mostly YouTube videos on their cell phones.

The camera was so close you didn't understand what was going on most of the time and seemingly neither did the guards as the prisoners seemed to enjoy great liberty to discuss and wander.

I read in a user review here that the director brags his film has only 80 cuts? It's no wonder when you see how it's made, and really nothing to be proud of! The fact that it won an Oscar initially surprised me, but thinking of it, it makes sense: Oscars have become terrible at judging the merits of a film. So if the Academy thinks this is great there's a good chance that it is not.

Enlightened snobs are going to call it art, cinéma vérité and what-not, but really, the better descriptions would be found footage drama, reality TV movie, video game wannabe. Take your pick! The holocaust is here to give it an air of respectability, the dead only accessories for shock value.

So according to your logic, Gus van Sant's "Elephan" must be total garbage, too.

You don't even bother finding the actual source where the director supposedly brags.

But hey, I see you gave "Solaris" a 3, so I think I'd have a better time continuing this chat with a brick wall.

reply

Elephant and Solaris are both rubbish as well though?

reply

I use brick walls to protect myself against evil children.

Solaris and Elephant (I rated it 6) were shot like films, not like video games. I don't think you understood my logic. For the record, Solaris was not nearly as bad as Stalker, this Soviet monument to boredom.

Why would I bother finding the source? Whether the director said it or not is not going to change my opinion, my argumentation isn't based on this one statement, as an anecdote it just seemed relevant enough.

Elephant is one of the worst films ever made.

No wonder this film has gotten such bad reviews on IMDB. Most of the people have never heard of the term "cinema variete"

The way this was shot has a very clear meaning. You were simply for excuses to not understand it.

reply

Then enlighten me on what you think you mean by "cinéma variété", this might prove interesting. :)

"You were simply for excuses to not understand it."

I didn't understand this either and I don't think I need any excuses.
