Anyone else think it's just mediocre?

I think this film is worth seeing just for the opening and it's also fantastic the way they present LA, but it's so run of the mill unrealistic.

I don';t think the film is bad or even just okay. Yes it's good but I don't think it's OUTSTANDING. Aside from the fate of their relationship it's barely original. It's such a fantastical and idealistic view of Hollywood as a maker of films and as a system and as a representation of the American Dream. It's so re-affirmative of Hollywood that it will win most of it's nominations even if other films are better and more deserved of that attention. But the Oscars are bull anyhow, it's just hollywood trying to praise itself while excluding virtually all of world and independent cinema.

This films wants to be innovative, but recedes into familiar territory with beautiful talented heterosexual white protagonists given their happy ending. (I actually do think it's pretty original that they both needed each other to accomplish their dreams but that they couldn't do it if they stayed together) This film could have done such a better job at being more and more effectively self-critical/self-aware or cynical, but it wants to eschew all of this becuase it just wants to pay homage to Hollywood (Which is absolutely fine) It comes off as pretentious becuase it doesn't really revolutionize in the same way the band producer speaks of when confronting Gosling about his character's traditionalist ways.

I enjoyed it on a second attempt. I thought it was charming and bitter sweet while both showcasing hollywood and taking a swipe at it, but I dont think it's outstanding. Very happy for it's award nominations and for the people who are madly inlove with it, but for me it was just a nice change and an escape from all the Trump nonsense and senseless attacks around the world in the last year.

yep. just got home from cinema... it wasnt boring, but it wanst anything special either. there have literally been hundreds of movies that touched me more than this one. i thought it was a solid 6 or maybe even 7... but 14 oscar nominations? top50 movies of all time? lol.

Aside from the fate of their relationship it's barely original.

Casablanca is overtly alluded to throughout.

The movie does have innovations. See here for details:

This wouldn't be so annoying if this didn't have a 8.5~ rating. It's just a 7/10 star movie for me, even 6/10. So I'm not changing my 2/10 star vote until it goes down some reasonable steps from the ladder.

I agree great post

Yes.

A friend I know saw it and said it was useless. I seen it before my friend did and I loved it.

OP I agree with you. The film is nothing but mediocre. Nothing original about it, and what it does, it doesn't even do well. Rubbish soundtrack, and boring plot. If it wasn't for Rosling's charm, the film would get zero attention.
