Will average American viewers watch past first episode? Bait and switch.

I have to admit, the BBCA commercial teasers for this show are going to make a lot of viewers feel cheated when they realize it's staged using actors.

Most people will be tuning-in expecting to laugh at supposed pampered and sheltered royalty, not laugh with them at the reactions they draw from Americans.

I was expecting to laugh at both sides, to be honest. But I think it'll still be entertaining finding out that it's staged.

I hope its not a hit....Hasn't the US and other places had enuff of Sacha Baron Cohen and the likes..I get it...Its funny to goof on people..These people aren't a$$holes they'er actor's.

I think it is pretty obvious from the commercials on BBCA that this is not about real royals visiting America.

It totally has that Ali G vibe.

Will it be a huge hit? Probably not. Even though I am an avid BBCA viewer, I don't think they really have any huge hits....maybe Top Gear?
But this American (points at self) will be watching, knowing exactly what to expect. I hope it is at least a big enough of a hit to last a couple series.
I was so mad when some channel here in the States recently advertised they were bringing The Ali G Show back and it turned out just to be repeats of old episodes.

Ya me too. That was FXX. Only the intros were new, everything else was either old or just old footage that was too crappy to make it to the show before.

Like you, I still will give this show a try. It could be worth a couple laughs - but who knows.

This show just looks kind of absurd. I get the attempt at humor behind it but its been done so many times before. The one I actually liked called 'Daisy Does America' starring Daisy Donovan didnt last very long but was genuinely entertaining.

'When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.'

reply

Daisy Donovan was hot. I'd watch her doing anything.

Her show, like Ali G made fun of Americans. All the jokes from the clips and trailers are on the brother and sister or just generally funny dialogue.

reply

LOVED Daisy Does America! "Whooo, pig, pig, pig." lmao

reply

Wait, people actually think that the brother and sister are actually real? How dense could you possibly be?

reply

From the BBCA promos I thought that they had hired a real brother and sister to pretend to be airheads. Instead, it seems they hired a couple of actors to pretend to be airheads. Not a lot of difference that I can see; it's phony either way.

BBCA has more than Top Gear as a hit, first of all - Orphan Black, In the Flesh, Luther. Heaps of fun, good shows. And while I don't typically watch "reality" shows, I end up enjoying the fake ones like Kevin Hart's Hollywood Husbands show...and this one. I think I read something that clued me into it not ring a real reality show, and it's hilarious. Just saw the Boston episode on VOD and enjoyed it. The actors are funny and quick-witted, especially Georgie the brother. Cheeky.

reply

I for one am sick and tired of these 'reality' shows. Real or fake.
I see it as the dumbing down of American culture.
I used to think it was a fad but it's coming up on a couple of decades now.
Is our society really becoming this stupid?

Where oh where are the good intellectual comedies we used to have?
Please, PLEASE media industry, axe these moronic shows and bring back the intelligence. Show us that our culture isn't starting to mimic art. Show us that we are not becoming the nation portrayed in the movie 'Idiocracy'!

reply

The people who believe this is real also believe the mermaid and Megalodon "documentaries" were real too.

I know you won't break the rules because there aren't any.

reply

BBCA is trying to perpetuate that notion though, even on interview shows on the network they are introduced in the promos as their characters not their real names. I think BBCA wants people to think they are really royals.

They absolutely are not trying to fool anyone... they are just extending the gag.. There's a long tradition of this... it's the same thing Sacha Baron Cohen did for Borat (he appeared on the talk shows as his character rather than himself)...

Any people watching the promos who think this is real are simply not paying attention or don't care enough about it to bother.

P.S.- This show is hilarious.

And that is different from perpetuating the notion, how?

reply

The way I meant it is: they are just extending the show... I guess I chose my words poorly - because I didn't intend them the way you took them.

I stand by my point though, and the example I referenced... when "Borat" appeared on the talk show circuit - they weren't trying to fool any one.

And I don't think these folks were trying to fool anyone when they appeared on Graham Norton and clips in between Orphan Black... both appearances were obviously a joke in the same way the show is obviously a joke when you watch it.

Sure: Somebody could see a poster or catch a commercial in passing and not be aware it was a joke - but that's all due to their indifference or lack of attention... the producers and marketing is not attempting to fool anyone...

I also stand by my point that the show is hilarious (at least the first 2 eps were)...

I am probably one of the few that does not feel cheated at all. I am happy BBC created this programme, and I am not at all ashamed that I did laugh, many times, with the English, and it was just one episode. I do believe that I am really going to adore this programme.

Well now Derry, I think that you missed the point.

The point is NOT having the Brits mock Americans and laugh their heads off because Americans are so incredibly stupid. (And, the point is not to pretend to be American when one is actually British.)

The point is having a different perspective and enjoying the difference.

I have watched British TV since the "Carry On" movies were shown at our local art theater.

I have spent a month in the UK every year since 1971. I am absolutely at home in the UK.

I watch British programming because it makes me happy, with (usually) outstanding writing, fabulous mysteries, gentle comedy, amazing renditions of great books, and to just see the country; occasionally I spy a bridge, a building, a shop, a cathedral, or just an intersection that is familiar because I've been there.

I have NEVER watched British TV as a chance to mock another country or culture.

reply

Actually, I think it's a rather benign form of humour. They don't really take the p*ss out of the Americans on the show, many of whom come across as pretty sensible and nice (the agent, the Bold & Beautiful actress, the casting lady) - it's more about taking the p*ss out of the English stereotype that many Brits recognise from Prince Charles down.

The British have a long tradition of poking fun at themselves, which I think this show is more about.

The actors do a great job of capturing and satirising that stereotype, while also subtly nodding at the viewer, reminding us that it is all just an act, and a very funny one.

It may not be brilliant, memorable comedy, but I was in tears a few times, and that's what counts as far as I'm concerned.

I just hope they can keep it up and that the joke doesn't wear thin.

reply

Every Brit immediately knows that they are actors, people like this do not appear in TV reality shows.

If American viewers don't realise that the brother and sis are actors in the first episode then unfortunately they have already missed out on the joke and the fact that it I s so over the top really means that only the stupidest Americans won't realise.

reply

It's hilarious and hopefully will take many Americans in.
