Yeah, this could easily flop. (Update)

(Since I posted this topic a few things have happened. They have indeed released a new trailer that I believe has added a great deal of hype to this movie. Also, King Arthur has changed release dates so now PR is contending with Chips and Life, both of which I think have less broad appeal than PR. So I am now cautiously optimistic about the movie performing well enough to warrant a sequel. I do still think Beauty and the Beast will be a massive hit and that PR will have to fight for a #1 spot on it's opening.)

Not only that but flop hard, because March next year is absolutely stacked.

First will come Logan, which is highly anticipated as the final performance by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Then there is Beauty and the Beast, and if Jungle Book was any indicator, this could be a heavy hitter as well.

One week before Power Rangers, comes Kong, Skull Island. Kong is a cultural icon, the new movie boasts an amazing cast and it's well known that they are setting up a shared universe with Godzilla.

And still yet, Power Rangers opens next to a new King Arthur movie which could also prove to be tough competition.

It seems to me, only hardcore fans will definitely be in line for Power Rangers, and casual movie goers are going to have a buffet of big options to choose from.

Unless the next trailer is nothing short of phenomenal, I don't think it looks good.

Have to disagree.. the teaser served as more of a character introduction. We havent seen the zords, suits in action, fight scenes, a lot more of the villains, the action, megazord, weapon.. etc.

Therez always a chance that this could flop but there have been movies in the past with anazing casts that flopped pretty hard.

We'll just have to wait.

So true

I honestly can't see Kong or King Arthur having mass appeal. The rest I agree with.

Its amazing how people hang around message boards of movies they dont like

Hm . . . the recent X-men wasn't crazy huge, I don't think? The recent Godzilla was about in the same range. So I'm not sure if Logan or Kong will give this movie too much grief.

And I'm not even sure what King Arthur movie you mean.

Beauty and the Beast will surely be a hit. That could be trouble, even if the movies will likely draw in different audiences anyways.

I might also add that March is becoming a huge month for movies. Just this year had Zootopia, which grossed over a billion dollars, and Batman v Superman which "underperformed" at nearly 900 million. There'll probably be a few hits this time around.

Screen rant has released their early projections for 2017, and Power Rangers is number 13 on their list @ 600 million world, and just under 200 mill domestic.

Its main draw being China (like pacific Rim) and Japan (the mother land). As far as japan goes its a big ??????????? as to how well it will perform. It could do great, or nothing at all. With it being a Reboot of an adaptation of their original creation....that's twice removed. It could do great if promoted as a very expensive Super Sentai "original creation" movie.
I am Curious if Toei will handle its distribution in Japan, or if LionsGate will partner with them for it.

With 14s Godzilla Toho handled all of the Japanese marketing and distribution, so this could be interesting.

Mind you this is screen rants EARLY projection...so who knows

I agree but mungosmungo8694 made a good point about the international box office and doesn't this now beg a question, Is Hollywood selling to America anymore?

The first thing I noticed about the trailer was Battlefield Earth cinematography and generic white attractive kids with the stereotypical black nerd. At first I hated it and I still do. But that is what Asia loves, crazy weird CG and photo-shopped perfect white actors.

I look at this like transformers, not for my demographic at all. What happened to blockbusters with universal appeal? That's why Guardians did so well.

So it will be a domestic flop, but will remain highly profitable in a foreign market is my guess

I am reading more and more interviews with distributers and they are more hungry for making money in China and other big markets.

At one time if it failed in the US you were done. Now the US may still be the biggest market, but with so many other franchises making great/un-heard of cash flow in other countries, the studios are thinking globally...not just US. I don't think it will truly flop here, but I do very much agree that the bulk of its cash will come from the World Wide gross.

Our Market is just simply very cluttered and finicky. An original idea that will cost a modest amount of money, that gets great reviews will flop here in the states, but yet Marvel can make the same 4 movies over and over again, and almost hit the 500+ mill mark Domestically. Same original idea can open in China and reach almost the same numbers....

I still think that if this movie can pull in 450+ mill world wide that's 4 times its budget back. Well say 100 mill for advertising, which they will make up in toys sales, which will also be a chunk of advertising. That's 350 mill...now that's not great but that's a profit.
add toy sales back into the steam and other licensing deals, you are close to 500 mill in the profit zone...not bad at all.

Now if it hits 600 mill like the article said, then it will not take long for the sequel to get green lit

• They tried too hard to make things more gritty- This was also one of the reasons Fant4stic blew up in Fox’s faces. Rather than making an organic movie, Saban and Lionsgate decided to throw shit at a wall, and see what stuck. At times, you wonder if this was a Power Rangers movie, or some bizarre twist in the newest Saw film. I get that they wanted to make a modern interpretation of the franchise, but they did too much. Tried too hard. Which ties into the next point.

• They changed the characters entirely- They completely messed with the moral polarity of the Rangers, as one would have heard in the show. Jokes about jerking off a bull is not something you’d expect, let alone want, in a Power Rangers movie. That was something you’d expect to find in a Jackass movie.

As soon as you saw that, you should’ve known that was a prelude of things to come. Almost everyone was an asshole, because hey, gritty movie here! How edgy! Give me a fucking break.

Then there was the buzz about a possible gay Ranger, that being Trini. In fact, it was supposedly one of the drawing points by some of the movie. They made it a big thing. There are ways to have gay or lesbian characters in a show or movie. They mainly involve not making a big deal about it. Simply have them be there, and just let it happen. This is what happened in Babylon 5, when it was hinted that Commander Susan Ivanova was bisexual, and that Talia Winters might have been, as well.

• They turned Goldar into a Zord- This was one of the most dangerous and enduring villains in the history of the franchise. Whenever he or Scorpina entered the battle, you knew you were in for it.

Yet the movie turned him into the monster of the week at worst. At best, he was an evil Zord.

That was downright offensive to everyone who liked Goldar.
