Such unlikable characters

I've kept watching. Hoping for some redeemable qualities in the characters.. I'm into Season 2, and so far NOT!!

Same for me. After the innocent Indian was hanged for a crime he didn't commit, I couldn't take it anymore and turned it off for good. I can't believe all of the adultery and back stabbing. It actually would have been so much better if there were any redeeming characters that had any integrity. The only one who did died mid way brought the first season. Horrible.

Yeah, Chris, and this series reminds me more and more of that series, the Killing wherein the audience is subjected to an endless "whodunnit," stringing the audience along with endless unpleasant characters.

Well, I watched all the way thru Season 2. There is some resolution, ending somewhat happily, thank goodness, since there will be no Season 3.

In real life people are often not redeemable. I prefer this look at people vice the often sugar coated version of people. The show seems to be a fairly honest showing of the behavior of those involved in the British Raj.

Julie Walters plays a vile, evil woman. Ralph Whelan seems ambiguous at some points, but by the end of Season One it is clear his is also evil. By I wouldn't put all the characters in that basket. Ralph's fiancee and sister, Alice, seem like decent sorts. The minister's wife, Sarah, is a vicious shrew, so quite unlikable, but not as bad as Mrs. Coffin or Whelan.
