the awful twist (spoilers)

Was really liking this movie un till the end twist and Santa was just a crazy guy.
It was such a cool character, loved the staff weapon etc. Kind of like the new Ash.
Then the depressing, oh look its all in his head.
(sigh) film dropped from 8 stars to 2 stars for me.

why is modern horror all about the depressing end, a better end would be Santa fighting the big baddie and it been an awesome Freddie vs. Jason slugfest.

then at the end he rides of to face the other monsters from the film...

Oh well....

I actually really loved the ending and the ending was my favorite part of the movie.

my jaw literally "dropped" from the twist. I didn't like the other stories as much (I did love the Krampus one) but the twist was really great.

not only did I NEVER saw that coming, At all, but it was genius to show how the elves never became zombies, that concept was pretty silly. Dont get me wrong, I like the silliness of the zombie elves

but the twist made it go from silly to dark and shocking really fast, like going from 0 to 60...

I just saw the movie and I am still shocked by it. still haunted by seeing the employees running for their lives.

Like i said, out of all the stories, that had the greatest ending (The story about the baby was boring and the story about the kid was kind of annoying)

It wasn't all in the mall Santa's head. The real Santa was projecting his experiences into the mall Santa.

wait.... what?
explain?

That's just my weird take on things. I want to think that the strange events at the north pole actually happened, and the elves actually became zombies. Just fun to think about it that way. And Santa's experiences were somehow channelled into the mall Santa.

I actually think it was the other way around. The "twist" really didn't make sense given that we'd seen Santa happy and relaxed with the elves and Mrs Claus at the beginning. Why would a crazy guy who hated Christmas imagine that bit too? Plus why imagine yourself as a badass viking-style Santa? A hallucination would have been more "traditional". Anyway, this is what I believe happened:

Note how just before Santa "wakes up" to the "reality" of what's going on, Krampus' horn is struck off and smashes on the ground. I believe this released some kind of hallucinogenic dust/spore, something of a natural defense mechanism for Krampus. This makes Santa believe, at least for a few seconds, that he is actually a crazy mortal and a bad guy rather than a tragic hero, allowing Krampus enough time to escape or deeply wound him (I doubt Santa can be killed - He's Santa after all!). Rather like the Red Dwarf episode "Back to Reality" where the ink from the Despair Squid makes the characters believe they have been playing a "Total Immersion Video Game" and that they are actually all terrible people, to provoke them into committing suicide.

I know they were hoping people wouldn't analyse the "twist" too deeply but it just did not make sense given what came earlier.

Gee, Adam, I think you're really reaching trying to retain 'heroic' Santa. Given Norman's 'eff Christmas' attitude, it seems fitting that he would imagine the mall employees as mindless zombie elves. I generally don't like twist endings at all as they mostly seem to be a screenwriting trick to add something interesting to a poorly written script, but this particular one seemed completely appropriate to me.

reply

Haha possibly! Honestly, it's the opening segment of that story that seems not to fit with the twist. Plus the fact that all the other stories are supernatural and one even features Krampus - makes this one seem like the odd-one-out :)

The twist ending was the only thing that redeemed the otherwise worthless zombie elf story, and thankfully gave welcome context to whatever the hell Captain Kirk had been wittering on about the whole second half of the movie. I also liked the twist to the krampus story when the girl turned into the Krampus, and told the whold bitch "you've been naughty" lol. The other two stories which both started off much better had no such twist and both ended with a disappointing whimper. So for me, the ending maybe added a point, but I'm still struggling to vote above 5.

The ending was brilliant. Ending with Santa killing Krampus would have been fine but expected. The twist was surprising and creative.

I gave it an 8, was at a 7 until the ending. Love this movie.

I thought it was a great twist, totally unexpected. For me the Santa and elves story didn't fit until then. 7/10 for me, great little film.

Until the twist I found the Santa plot line too silly (compared to the rest) and weak. The twist made it for me. Genuinely didn't see it coming and it made the story mean something and actually was quite scary and tragic.

I really enjoyed the twist. Especially when I look hindsight of the DJ scenes. Plus I thought at first they were just using a store to do the scenes because it was cheaper, but the twist makes it work so much better.

The only bad thing is that all the other stories were supernatural in one way or another. Perhaps if they added something to this story that something supernatural was giving him the delusions.

Agreed. The terrible twist ending ruined the movie for me too :(
