The overcoat

Watching this movie without subtitles, and i'm not a native english speaker, and understand absolute zero of german and russian. When Tom Hanks is at the East Berlim embassy, the guy negotiating with him says, at the end of the scene "at this weather please use an overcoat". Tom Hanks say his was stolen, and i can't understand the other guy's reply. Can anyone tell me what was it about?

Corruption is our protection, it's what keeps us safe and warm. Corruption ... is why we win.

The foreign official identifies the store label (Brooks Brothers?) that was on the overcoat, implying that the thugs were in his employ.

implying that the thugs were in his employ

It only implied to me that everyone knew he was wearing a coat worth stealing, like everyone in a small town knows what happens to everyone in the town.

You must be an ignorant liberal. Spreading false info. If you don't know for sure , keep your mouth shut !!!!

Hey, Buckeye90, how about you cool your jets or get off this sight. Keep it civil.

The store label was Saks 5TH Avenue. It is a more expensive coat than a Brooks Brothers. The agent implied that Hanks/Donovan's coat was stolen because it was expensive, like a Rolex vs Times watch. But as bravomailer states below, he had sent the gang to wait for/rob him. Letting Donovan know that he was not to even think that he was in control of the negotiating. Throwing in the plausible deniability like a slap to the face.

Books and movies are usually better than real life.

I wish that robbery scene had been subtitled. You're right, the robbery was a set up: the robbers were waiting around for Donovan to appear.

The Govt guy at Russian embassy says well it was from Sax 5th Ave; what did you expect.

To me it implies that they were watching him the whole way crossing the border; getting harassed by thugs. Heck they probably put the thugs up to harassing him just to throw him off his game and incentive to make a deal and get the hell out of dodge.

A real gang would have just beat him; took coat; wallet; passport; etc.
