and Hollywood's fat female phobia continues....

The Spanish guy was overweight, Jeff Daniels is old and not in the best shape, Chiwitel could stand to lose a few pounds (come on, let's do this by BMI: Let's say his BMI is 25.5. If a woman had that BMI, that would place her at a size 6-8 and she'd never get a role in most films.)

Damon had a good body but notice how they wouldn't make him lose weight for the role. Yeah... we're gonna have you play the role of some guy who gets stranded on mars with only potatoes to eat for 3 years but don't worry, you don't have to lose a pound, you're perfect as is..you're a man after all...

Meanwhile, all four women were emaciated. And TWO scenes (in a movie that took place 99% on a space ship,) featured women on tread mills sweating their faces off...you know...just in case you forgot a woman's duty, dear viewer. We really have to drive the point home.

Seriously, Hollywood, you have a severe psychological issue. Get help.

What I didn't understand is with all the concern for accuracy here why they didn't cast actresses who are built more like real female astronauts (some of them very attractive) like Mae Jemison, Sally Ride, Marsha Ivins, Anousheh Ansari, Susie Helms, etc. etc.

Well, the city's being built and I'm winning this game. So don't interrupt us with trifles.

Damon didn't lose weight? was the skinny Damon CGI then?

Another woman hating on what the miracle of evolution produced. Fat women don't get chosen by the hot males, for good reason, they're ugly.

Sorry about that, you want to redo evolution?

look one of the sexes had to get their hands dirty, support family, not care about looks and even get scars for making family safe while other partner stayed beautiful, safe and fertile. someone had to do the job. who in your opinion should have done that? do you prefer standards for ugly girl and pretty guy?

thats how we got those standards. now that there is no need for dirty work anymore, why not both sexes try to be pretty? and i think thats the right move, but u cant eliminate million years of evolution in one night. it needs time and we are getting there slowly. instead what you are trying to do is for people to be ok with ugly girl. guys always had reasonable excuse for not caring about their looks. girls never did. thats why its harder to excuse girl's ugliness than guy's

I don't have time to read through this whole thread, but just needed to say:

The women in this film are not "emaciated"; they are healthy. When you say that they are "emaciated", it makes me think that you are an overweight woman with low self-esteem who is taking it out on other women. Sorry if that's not true, but that's the impression you are giving.

I'm all for not casting actresses based on their looks, but in the case of two of these women, it makes sense; they were astronauts, their job requires them to be extremely fit. As for the other two, they could have cast overweight actresses, but to do that just for the sake of being PC would be stupid. The actresses got the role because they were the best to audition; likewise, the male "overweight" actors you mentioned got the role because they, too, were the best to audition. End of story.

Seriously, Hollywood, you have a severe psychological issue. Get help.

Maybe you should look in the mirror before you start accusing other people of having psychological issues.

Nobody likes looking at fat chicks. That's never going to change. Being obese doesn't make you a persecuted victim. It makes you unhealthy and undesirable.

This film bent over backwards for the sake of diversity, its rich that you find something to criticize.

Bold statement. Some people don't mind it. Also, if you paid even a little bit of attention to my post you'd know that I am not calling for 300 pound women to portray astronauts. I've stated multiple times that there is a happy medium between Jessica Chastain and Gabourey Sidibe.

That's never going to change

It already is.

Being obese doesn't make you a persecuted victim

Didn't say obese, didn't say victim. Reading comprehension 0/10.

It makes you unhealthy and undesirable

Unhealthy depends on how fat you are. Undesirable is always in the eye of the beholder.

This post is getting funnier and funnier! 

It's just that you live in a world ruled by us chauvinist pigs, and we can't stand the image of fat ladies ruining our screens. We don't give a damn about fat or ugly men, however, because we just don't notice them.

Give it a rest!!! 

People on the ground can be overweight. Their health is not as critical.

People in space can't be. They don't have as much food as you do due to how expensive it is to bring stuff into space. You have to cut it down to the bare necessities. Each extra KG on board costs a ridiculous amount in extra fuel to launch it.

The lifestyle you live is much more critical when you're on a mission where things can go wrong. You have to be in tip top shape, so no overweight astronauts.

Damon wanted to lose weight IRL for the role, but Scott didn't let him.
