Was the diaper on face scene really necessary?

I was enjoying this movie then that disgusting scene takes place. The problem is, that with such disgusting scenes people want to forget the movie or not talk about it after leaving the theaters or recommend it to someone. That's why certain "realisms" are not included in movies. I certainly want to forget this.

Necessary? Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?

reply

No, but I do it anyway because it's sterile and I like the taste.

reply

Haha to both of you, well played.....

I doubt that people hated the scene so much they refused to discuss the film ever again.

"What race are you? If you don't tell me I'll just...assume the worst."

My group did

The scene was necessary to show how far their craziness is.

So you felt disgusted by it? So did most of us. That is why I feel it was by design. Like someone else pointed out earlier, it was necessary for potraying how crazy the old man was in a very short amount of time. If you felt disgusted by it, imagine how the kid who we all know is a germophobe felt like. It was meant to make your stomach churn.

Also, the old man was kind of getting back at the kid for snooping on him inside the shed, earlier in the movie. He poked his nose into where it didn't belong so now.... It was poetic justice - crazy people style.

I'm pretty much sure all audiences inferred how crazy the grandparents were without the diaper scene.

reply

I agree. But the intensity with which it hits them, I feel, might have been less without the diaper scene. Feeling tense and revulsion at the same time made me feel more ill at ease. When I go see a horror film, even if it doesn't downright terrify me, I expect it to atleast disturb me somehow, make me jump out my skin. After Antichrist and then The Witch, this was one of the only horror movies (which I've seen) that truly disturbed me.

I am not saying there is something wrong with you. This was too much for you. I can understand and accept that. Different strokes for different folks. But..

when you assume you are speaking for everyone else. That is something which starts irking me.

I don't think this scene was necessary either, but quite frankly, neither was this whole movie. Someone wrote that this scene (diaper in face) "was needed to show their craziness in a short amount of time". The director had 1 hour and 35 minutes to show the behavior of psychiatric patients. Turns out, this hack is under the impression that mental patients act like demons - retching, vomiting, scratching walls. (It's always left up to the director's interpretation, but I've seen plenty of horror movies where the main characters are possessed by some demonic force, & they all act like that. In fact, I thought that was the twist of the movie). I didn't feel like this scene would prevent me from discussing the film, the clichés and lack of creativity did.

Oh?! So that's how the demon's in your neighbourhood act, huh? Going around town "retching, vomiting, scratching walls" Silly little demons, am I right?

reply

The demons in my neighborhood?! What are you talking about? You're not making sense. Just like this stupid movie.

reply

The kid was a germaphobe. He was already disgusted by the discovery of the diapers, so this was just what he needed to drive him over the edge.

reply

It's probably the most memorable scene in the movie, so yes.

reply

Absolutely necessary. The brother's whole character arc is he overcomes his fear of germs.
