They want way too much from child actor Millie Bobby Brown

Switching between multiple characters is tough thing to do for grown-up actors, but asking a child to do that is asking too much. She's not good, which is not her fault - she's simply too young and inexperienced for the task. I've never seen a child acting well as an adult and it's the same here. Her acting is so off-putting it ruins each scene. Then again, it's what the book dictated. So while I understand the filmmakers dilemma, I still think it's like watching an experiment gone wrong.

You're entitled to your opinion. I happen to disagree with it...I think she's doing a great job. It is very tricky for any actor to schizophrenically switch between two different personas, and at first the show was depending on the "expanding iris" shot of the eyes to help establish it, but I think in the case of Marcus/Madison, MMB can change tones effortlessly to let us know when whichever personality is in control of her body. Granted, the two personas are just pretty much just one-note characters so far (Madison: scared little girl; Marcus: cocky & sadistic villain), so the real challenge for her will be if she needs to bring other emotions into play for each one (such as perhaps Marcus showing fear, or Madison being confident). Time will tell, but I think she's nailing it so far.

Some men just like to watch the world burn!

reply

Okay, I think I have to be more specific & clearer: She's not bad, in fact she is as good as it gets. Still, I think that those 'shifts' are too much for ANY child actor to be convincing. I see her and I see a child acting as good as a child can possibly act, but I don't see the old man she's supposed to be.
I think the title of my post was misleading as I am of the opinion that there isn't a child actor in this world how could pull off what the filmmakers are asking of that character.

reply

No those shifts are NOT too much for any child actor to be convincing. You stated you don't see the old man she's supposed to be, don't believe a child in the world could pull it off...she is pulling it off just fantastically. I'm a SAG member and some of the things I've seen child actors pull of is incredible. Perhaps there is an underlying reason you seem to have this preconceived notion that is blocking you to being receptive. Another alternative is you could be comparing her to much to Mira Sorvino's shifting (and not even realizing it). You acknowledged she is good. I'm sorry you don't see what the rest of us see as the show would be that much more enjoyable for you.

I thought she did a fantastic job. I the finale though she seemed a bit off. The scene on the beach with her and Marcus talking she, as Madison, had way too much Marcus in her mannerisms and tone. I know she was trying to act assertive but it just came off as Marcus. To me anyway. Otherwise, an extremely effective performance.

Fingers crossed for season 2.

The very first question should always be "What laws can we abolish to remedy this situation?"

reply

Yeah I saw that too. It made me think she wasn't as dynamic as I thought she was. Still good acting though especially for her age

reply

I'm not sure that even an ancient man in that ACTUALLY inhabited the body of a little girl could pull it off. It's just hard to take a little girl seriously in that manner (at least for me, as an adult). That said, I agree that she's doing about as good a job as can be done. I thought Adair Tishler also did a great job playing both an adult man and woman in the body of a little girl in the Epitaph episodes of Dollhouse.

What a lovely way to burn...

Beer -

Im with SANDOZ on this !

I think your wrong, on the contrary, her performance in most scenes is simply an outstanding.
It so clear when she switches characters and becomes Marcus.
I honestly do not know how you can say "she's not good."
I and many others will find that statement totally ridiculous.

I agree that this actress is not good. I don't think she's particularly great at acting like a child, but when she is acting as an adult her primary trait is to sound snotty. I get that she's young but really, some children are able to act who are younger than her and I'm always astonished. I think Lizzie and her sister (sorry, forget their names, but from The Walking Dead) are much better at coming across as their characters, they are kids but they don't stand out in any way. From what I remember, Jodie Foster and Kirsten Dunst very good at that age. Great at switching between character however weird was the little boy who played Danny in The Shining. The kids in The Others were fantastic as well. Actually, there are a lot of really great actors, young and old, in other countries (think Let the Right One In). I'm not sure if the US choose what they think will be the cuteness factor (olsen twins - ugh) over talent but we don't have a lot of young actors who are truly gifted.

Also, I like this show so it pains me to say that her character is distracting.

End of opinions.

Thankfully your opinion will CLEARLY be in the minority.!!!

None other than the GREAT STEPHEN KING, Personally tweeted " Millie Brown the girl on Intruders is terrific "

She's clearly doing something RIGHT !

This actress is not good ?

Yeah right.

reply

And what is your problem? Why do you sound so indignant and slightly hysterical? Is she your daughter or what?

Now, Stephen King. Great writer, love his books, read through Mr.Mercedes last week, but he really doesn't know much about movies/tv-shows or acting. Do you really need proof of that? He didn't like THE SHINING directed by Kubrick, said it was one of the worst King movies. THE SHINING, CLEARLY the best King movie.!!! (See how I mock you with your tendency to use caps and exclamation points? :)
He made a mini-series THE SHINING, directed it himself. And my god was that a terrible, boring trainwreck of a production, full of amateurish acting, totally lacking the pace of any 'trained' director.

He's really not the go-to guy to acknowledge your opinion, is what I'm saying.

At Marcus Bear (since I replied to you but it ended up as a general response),

I have to let you know because I did actually lol at the response to my comment, the first thing that came to my mind was The Shining vs. Stephen King's The Shining- what cheese his version was. He is great at coming up with a story (sometimes he falters but so what) but he is not a good director! Even if Aronofsky said she could act I'd think he was her uncle. Maybe the director could put a little more emphasis on her being cold instead of squinching up her face all the time, Marcus has a taunting way of talking but it's still not anywhere as "Im rubber and you're glue..." And that time she fumbled around her coat pocket for something, she did it just like a kid, it was supposed to come off as slick but my husband even giggled. But yeah, I'm just saying she can't act, what's the big deal?

lol

I agree that Lizzie and Mika were pretty terrific in their limited time on Walking Dead but I still assert that Millie did a fantastic job WHEN SHE WAS MARCUS FOX. I think she excelled at that. If you rewatch it, you will see that she was pretty thoughtful in her choices and did a great job. As Madison, pretty cookie cutter and average, which is funny because she is a child too! hehe She excelled as an adult; just average as a kid. Weird!

I agree that this actress is not good.

Really? She was the most entertaining thing about the show for me. They should give her her own spinoff!

Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.

reply

are you kidding. she is only reason i am watching this show. i just like her facial expressions and tits comments

reply

i think shes doing ok, she adds to the show, its challenging for a 10 year old,
and the fact shes had a go at it deserves some respect.
she makes me laugh and i look forward to seeing her scenes.
if Steven king says shes terrific then that's cool too.

I also disagree with the original poster. Personally, I feel the worst child actress is Bailee Madison, who played the young Snow White on Once. Good lord did that kid get coached. I base that mainly on a film she did, not her work on Once.

The difference between her and Millie, is that Millie has the mannerisms of an angry, perverse man DOWN. Personally, I feel the way she is able to switch between the two characters at such a young age is pretty impressive. She still has to memorize lines, as well as do the personality switch.

Not to mention, the way any of us view an actor is subjective. Some are believable to me, while not to others. No one's opinion is right or wrong. If a person's work entertains me, but not you, then just stop watching if you don't like it.

reply

Sorry guys, she is terrible. It has nothing to do with "don't watch" because then I could never own a TV. Every single show or movie has at least one unconvincing actor. On Intruders it is certainly Millie Brown. She is very unconvincing as Marcus and Maddy as well. Jack, Richard, Amy/Rose, Gary, etc. are all played by good actors so I will gladly continue to watch.

reply

Wow. This girl is the only reason I'm still watching this Show. Her acting is for her age superb. Haven't seen many better child actors.

reply

She's inconsistent. At times she's pretty good but just as often she's not.

It's a complex role and she's too young. Having said that, I still enjoy the hell out of the character. The same cannot be said for Amy/Rose. Now THAT is bad acting.
