childless.

I take it they were childless? Maybe he murdered the girl in the Alps cos she was preggers.

Y'know, anything, anything, would have made this film better. I bought the DVD because the film never showed in my area. I kept trying to see if the DVD was defective when it just--ended.

I find that a pretty ridiculous idea. Maybe they were childless because after losing the pregnant love of his life, he just couldn't get to the point where he wanted to try having a child to replace the one he lost. They never mentioned why they never had a family, so who knows?

reply

That was my impression ie he murdered her. I got this impression from the horror expression of Kate.

Why are people looking for ways to sensationalize a story that's about honest human emotions?

Rampling's character was unable to have children. It adds a layer to her jealousy when she learns that her husband's lost love was carrying his child. She understands that this other woman had offered him things she never could. That she would always be a substitution and not loved on her own merits, and could never surpass his memory of this perfect relationship in his past.

The girl being pregnant simply adds to her feelings of inadequacy, of being unwanted, as she approaches the end of her life knowing suddenly that she's more alone than she ought to be. Her husband doesn't love her with the passion she would hope for, and she has no children to leave behind.

It's pathos, not intrigue.

The way I understood it was that they had together decided to not have children. The phrase "our choices" was used. And it seemed that it was mainly Geoff who had wanted it this way, and that Kate had gone along with it. She got a dog as a "substitute".
Then she sees the pictures of the happy pregnant couple. So he wanted children with Katya and not with Kate.

You know, my original interpretation was what gbts said,

they had together decided to not have children. The phrase "our choices" was used. And it seemed that it was mainly Geoff who had wanted it this way, and that Kate had gone along with it.

But now I think the other poster is correct too. Meaning, Kate couldn't have biological children, and "our choices" was that they decided not to adopt. But now she finds out that Katya could (and did) get pregnant, and this makes Kate feel inadequate that she couldn't get pregnant.

The "they decided together not to have children" scenario never fully satisfied me, because as we agree, it seemed more Geoff's idea than hers. This is the kind of thing that would be discussed before marriage. If she wanted kids and knew going in that he didn't, that would be a deal-breaker for many people who want kids. That's not something many people would "go along with." A scenario where they marry and plan to have kids, are not able to, and choose not to adopt, makes more sense to me.

When and where during the movie does Kate discover that Katya had been pregnant? I do not recall such a scene in the film.

reply

When she's in the attic, looking at the pictures through the projector. The last couple of pictures show Katya's hand resting on her belly bump, strongly suggesting that she's pregnant. That's why Kate suddenly stops the projector and leaves the attic bewildered.

reply

Yes, I don’t understand why these people even watched a movie like this.

reply

No no no. They, or Geoff, decided not to have children. Seeing Geoff's first lover pregnant with his child is what is freaking Kate out. That's what Kate is talking about when she says "all" those things. I think.
