Suck it John!

Hahahaha!!!! You're 0-2 in your crusades now. Hope you join the rest of the loser parade on your way out of the country.

reply

Right on. In this country we all need to have the exact same ideals. Any differing opinions need to get out. Follow one rule and one rule only.

reply

It isn't the differences in opinion, it's the smug, elitist, superior attitudes on both sides that piss people off.

I watch this show and Samantha Bee's and I like both of them a lot (the shows and the hosts), but they are definitely very left-wing, which I am not. But both are very entertaining and often make good points. Oliver especially is quite intelligent and his exposés on entities like MLMs and insurance companies are spot-on.

Bill Maher is the one who really needed to be taken down a peg or three - I wonder if the results of this election have wiped that smirk off his smug mug?

"Two gin and Frescas"
"Shaken, not ridiculed"

reply

I watched 30 minutes of a Maher episode at a friend's request and that was all I could take.

This election should wake up the democrats and tell them they have a house to clean up and organize. The republicans may have some issues but the left is right there.

Regarding that smug mug? I can only imagine he's in the fetal position in a dark room right now.

It's obvious Oliver despises Trump but most of what he said about him is factual. And while he didn't get on Clinton's issues as much as I would have preferred, I don't recall him actually raving about Clinton's virtues (what there are of them).

reply

Yes, my disdain is not about differences of opinion. It is the way Oliver has talked down to his political foes for the past six months. He mocked the brexit voters and made them sound like ignorant hicks who didn't even know what they were voting for. He was doing the same thing against Trump supporters, and every other candidate except Hillary. He didn't even spent 1/100 the time looking in to Hillary and the 30 year trail of maleficence that she has left since her days in Little Rock.

I do look forward to this week's episode, if he has the balls to have one. Maybe him and Bill Maher can cry on each others shoulders.

reply

He mocked the brexit voters and made them sound like ignorant hicks who didn't even know what they were voting for.
They didn't. lol

reply

Um, yes we did, moron. We voted to leave an undemocratic cabal of incompetents.

reply

Thats just admitting that you didnt know what you were voting for. It never fails to amaze me just how much the british public falls for the propaganda bullshit of the daily record, sun etc etc. Even farage banging on about being independent. We already are independent! Theres a differnce between working with and working for. This idea that everything will get better because you get out of europe is just mind boggling. Most if not all complaints raised in favour of leaving the eu have nothing to do with the eu. Its all been our government doing it to us. In fact being in the eu has stopped them doing things that would have hurt us more. Like human rights, teresa may doesnt like them. The public dont like them because abu hamza used them so he wouldnt be deported. But you can be sure as fuck you want them when you start being treated like cattle.

People in the UK love to bang on about the US and its shady politicians but sweet moses, ours are just as bad. All the corrupt child molesters selling off state own things like the post office to themselves didnt raise any eyebrows at all even though they took us for a couple of billion. It was a labour government that gave all that money to the banks with no real plan to pay it back and so fucked us, it was not was not bald kids who skip the queue at alton towers that caused us to have such money problems, it was the banks, it was our government. It was not europe, it was not the polish, the unemployed, the disabled, or anyone else but the banks and the government.

In the end the UK government is still going to want ties to europe. No matter which group you vote for your going to get the exact same thing, norway. Which means we'll still be paying the same amount of money. We'll still have to let people come and go as they please and everything else. They only difference is that we wont have a seat at the table about making policy.

But its done now, and things will get a lot worse and the "i told you so"s are coming.

reply

No. It's admitting that we voted to leave an undemocratic cabal of incompetents.

Reading clearly not a strong point of remainers. We get it, you're capitalists who adore the banks and big businesses that have pushed the EU for decades and want to see further homogeny. But your capitalist vision of the future is both retarded and unworkable.

Perhaps seek out the thoughts of Tony Benn, Tariq Ali etc and educate yourself a little better.

Instead of parroting the small-minded concerns of Deutschebank and the IMF (noted for their historic championing of the people), you might want to dig a little deeper.

reply

That just proves further that you have no clue what you voted for. Sorry, but if you don't want the uk to be like America, you backed the wrong horse. You have handed the country to the self proclaimed "thatchers children".

reply

Um no, it proves further that you haven't really engaged with the issue to any educated degree.

In the short term, the Tories might benefit (hence the immediate need for a stronger Labour party) but this isn't about the next five years, it's about the next 50.

Go do some research that isn't interlarded with narrative. I strongly suggest starting with Tariq Ali. You might also want to have a look at Mark Blyth.

reply

wow, dude. You sound just like a republican. They talk about the future while ignoring the present as well. You do understand that we WILL NOT BE LEAVING, right? We will be rebranding our relationship that's it. We loss our Vito power, and we gain being completely under the thumb of the Europe with no platform to voice our objections.

And the fact you think Labour is the answer screams volumes about how uneducated you are. In 50 years we will at best be the 51st state. At worst we'll be an irrelevant island that's used as little more than a cautionary tale of corrupt power coupled with an easily manipulated populous.

Take a look around you, buddy. No one is thinking long term. They are thinking about getting rid of polish people. Stopping Johnny jehad from sneaking in as refugee, and that people with no legs better learn how to crawl. There's nothing but hate in this countey spurned on by a Tory government that will sell off the NHS with in the next 5 years. Your thinking about 50 years from now? Sorry but by that time it will be too late.

all you and everyone else did was tell the bald kid at Alton towers he's not allowed to jump the queue anymore. You told the world that we are nothing more than trump supporters who judge people based on stereotypes and propaganda. You told the world that we can't think for ourselves and that Rupert Murdock is our leader. Job well done.

reply

Why would a Brit sound like a Republican? Surely they'd sound like a Tory.

Also... buddy? Who says buddy?

Hmmm. Fee Fi Foe Fank, I smell the idiocy of an ignorant Yank.

As you were (and do please seek out those chaps I mentioned... you'll learn something).

reply

So you attacked the person not the argument. What a worthless tory cunt you are.

reply

Nope, I attacked his idiocy then questioned how a Yank would know fuck-all about the subject matter.

Would you like to play? I'm happy to destroy more ignorant, uninformed idiots.

Wanting brexit is enough, since the only real reason to want it, is because you believe the bullshit in the express, mail, sun etc.

But lets just be serious for a minute. What so far has you convinced that the tories know what the fuck they are doing? Or that they are doing it for the good of the country? Or what benefits you think are going to come from it?

reply

[deleted]

Thats didnt answer any of my questions. I guess its just too hard to admit you got it wrong. And fyi, fuck labour. Nothing but tories in drag.

reply

Nope.

That's how it works in Yankland.

Here, the Labour party have just received a strong mandate for a socialist future. The third way is no longer tenable. We will not become a right-wing, capitalist utopia with insipid SJW liberals and alt-right conservatives defining the culture. Fuck that. We still believe in having a true opposition.

It wasn't just Oliver, it was pretty much all of Hollywood against Trump as the power brokers in Hollywood tend to be of a demographic that leans democratic. Anyway, I think John is funny, and now that the election is over, maybe I can go back to watching him.

reply

It wasn't just Hollywood against Trump. All of these were against Trump:

-- Most of the media. Even Fox News wasn't for Trump as much as it was anti-Hillary, except for a few individuals like Hannity.

-- The Republican leadership. They wanted anyone but Trump, and he spent much of the campaign calling them useless traitors.

-- Republican and conservative intellectuals almost universally abhor him and consider him a dangerous clown.

-- The breadth and depth of newspapers and magazines that considered him unfit was staggering. Newspapers that hadn't previously made endorsements in a presidential race broke with that tradition and endorsed Hillary because they considered Trump unfit. Newspapers like the Arizona Republic that had never endorsed a Democrat for president endorsed Hillary because they considered Trump unfit.

-- The vast majority of people with a college education.

The people who support Trump generally fall into these categories:

-- Hillary haters.

-- Partisans who will vote Republican no matter what.

-- People who rationalize away Trump's rhetorical nonsense, his lack of experience in political office, his ignorance of how government works, his ignorance of domestic and foreign affairs.

-- People who are anti-status quo and think we need to burn it all down.

-- People taken in by Trump's cult of personality, who think a loudmouth reality celebrity and Twitter troll should be president.

-- People who think the Supreme Court, particularly regarding abortion and the Second Amendment, is more important than anything else.

-- Racists and xenophobes.

Hillary was the perfect candidate to run against because there is such much entrench hatred and distrust of her. Even many people like myself who voted for her didn't like her.

The Supreme Court was a huge issue that determined many people's votes. Evangelicals voted for the most non-religious, morally corrupt individual imaginable because of the abortion issue in regards to the Supreme Court.

The echo chamber of social media and internet media was huge. Entities like the Republican establishment and traditional media that have traditionally been influential in presidential elections were rendered irrelevant.

We'll see where we go from here. Trump supporters are reveling in their implausible victory -- just look at this thread title -- but we'll see how they feel when they see the actual consequences of electing him. My hope is for ineffectual incompetence that we can outlast, but the fear of many is that we'll get arrogant stupidity that has disastrous and lasting consequences. The economy, the environment, international relations, the social fabric -- all are in great peril.

It is inconceivable to half the country that someone who is an incompetent, unqualified, arrogant, ignorant, xenophobic, and yes, racist buffoon could be elected president. After running such a mean-spirited, shallow, dishonest campaign and being elected on the backs of those filled with hatred and anger, you can't expect a measured victory speech and a plea for unity to placate the half of the country that feels betrayed and targeted by this man and his supporters.

I am clinging in my faith in our form of government as established by the Constitution. I have to believe that our form of government can endure a Trump presidency. I am under no illusions that there won't be dark times ahead, but I am trusting more than ever in the balance of powers between the branches and the limits of presidential power. I have to trust in the resiliency of our form of government and our society. I even retain hope that an electorate so desperate or foolishly duped to elect this man will learn from its mistakes.

Randy Newman wrote this as a satire, but let's hope this isn't our new reality.

I realize that almost everyone in the MSM hated Trump, but Oliver and Bill Maher took it to the extreme thanks to their free reign on HBO. Pay cable definitely afforded them a platform that others did not have.

I'm still stumped by attitudes like yours. Do you hate this country? Why do you wish to see Trump fail so badly? I didn't like Obama and I didn't vote for him, but once he was elected I at least held out hope that he would be different and might would make a positive difference. While I think Obamacare is flawed and will modified/replaced, it was at least an attempt to fix a system that could not be sustained for much longer. Higher Education is facing similar crisis, with costs outpacing inflation by almost 10x in some cases. In two or four years Trump has been ineffective or worse, a disaster, then feel free to throw him out of office. He did not become a billionaire by being a complete moron. He built an empire on his own, which is more than you could say for Bill, Hillary, or any of the Bush family.

reply

I'm still stumped by attitudes like yours. Do you hate this country? Why do you wish to see Trump fail so badly?

Where did I say anything about hating this country or wanting Trump to fail?

It's not that I WANT Trump to fail; it's that I no confidence that he can succeed. I consider him as prepared and capable of being president as he is of performing surgery. If I had him as my surgeon, I would WANT him to succeed, but I would have no confidence in his ability to actually perform an operation successfully. I WANT him to succeed as president, but I have no confidence that he will.

The man has given me no reason to believe he is capable of being president. Saying he'll repeal Obamacare on day 1 and replace it with "something great" is not a plan. Saying he'll cut taxes, increase military spending, and fund rebuilding the infrastructure without exploding the deficit may win over who want to believe him, but some of us can do math.

He has platitudes, not policies. He throws out slogans that pander to his base, but he has shown no interest in developing plans to implement his policies, such as they are.

We face serious challenges. You mentioned healthcare and higher education. What are his plans to reduce those costs? He doesn't have any.

This is a man who spent years pursuing a folly of saying Obama wasn't born in this country. And you want me to trust him to run the country?

I believe in science. Climate change is real. Even the oil companies know this. We are at a crucial point in dealing with climate change, but Trump could set those efforts back far more than his four years in office. We shouldn't have to wait until half of Florida is submerged and coastal cities are inundated before acknowledging that, yeah, this is real and not just part of the natural cycle of climate fluctuation.

Our security and our economy depend on alliances with other countries. Reneging on trade agreements and security alliances will have serious consequences.

All of this isn't to convince you to agree with my political views. My objective is help you understand why half the country thinks Trump is unfit and unqualified to be president and fears that his presidency will be a disaster. This is not a reaction against conservatism or Republican candidates. I would've voted for John Huntsman over Hillary. I might have voted for Jeb Bush over Hillary. I'm not seeing doom on the horizon if Mitt Romney is president.

This is about Trump. I thought Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush would be forever tied as the worst presidents of my lifetime, but they were vastly more prepared and competent to be president than Trump.

TL;DR.

FYI, In addition to winning big with whites, Trump actually pulled a larger percentage of black and latino voters than Romney did. CLose to 1 in 3 Hispanics that voted, voted for Trump. How do you align that with your wall of text above?

reply

Here's the problem with TL;DR -- politics and governing is details and nuance. It's complicated stuff. Engaged voters aren't put off by a few paragraphs of text.

Too many of Trump's supporters were won over by slogans and chants and couldn't be bothered with details. I suppose TL;DR fits perfectly for Trump voters.

justwrite3 has a very good outlook on things. I am shocked and discouraged by the incredible hate in this country. Immense name calling, blind loyalty and the unquestioned ability to accept anything said by their side as truth with no research at all is rampant. Hateful, non-objective and lazy is no way for citizens to act in arguably the best country in the world. No wonder politicians are the way they are. They're lowering themselves to our level. Or did we lower ourselves to their level? Either way it's a losing choice.

Oh good lord.

The gnashing of teeth and rending of garments over Trump's election is ludicrous. I know that many left-wing liberal Democrats believe with all their hearts that their way is the Right way, and that anyone other than their anointed nominees are evil incarnate, but come ON.

Donald Trump is not a demon, he is not a warlock, he's not Hitler, he is not looking to wreak havoc on democracy and scorch the earth with his hellfire. He's a man, and by most accounts a very smart, driven, hard-working man. Has he been metaphorically caught with his pants down? Yes. Is he a braggart who has said some incredibly dumb things? Yes. Has he made promises that he may not be able to keep? Of course; he was running for president. Find me one candidate who's mouth hasn't written checks that his policies couldn't cash.

Take a deep breath, it's going to be alright.

I am not a "left-wing liberal Democrat" who believes with all my heart that my way is the only way or that anyone other than my preferred nominees are evil incarnate.

I am a moderate. I believe that our country is best served by having strong, vibrant parties on both sides and by using the best that both conservative and liberal ideas have to offer. I am in favor of smaller government. The problem is that programs and bureaucracies are easy to create but hard to get rid of once they're in place. There should be some mechanism to determine which programs have outlived their usefulness and get rid of them.

I just voted for three Republicans for my city council.

Does that sound like a left-wing wacko to you?

I judge things on their merits. The presidency is an incredibly powerful position that, in the wrong hands, can cause a lot of damage to our economy and our country.

Jimmy Carter was a decent man who became an excellent ex-president, but he was awful while in office. He was intelligent and had experience as a governor, but he was overwhelmed by the demands of the job and hurt the economy badly.

George W. Bush had swagger and certitude, but he was manipulated by those around him and got us into the Iraq war and drove the economy off a cliff. He wasn't remotely up to the challenge.

Trump is Bush's swagger and certitude on steroids and he combines that with zero political experience, an appalling lack of knowledge about both domestic and foreign affairs, and even worse, he shows no desire to learn about issues or change course based on new information. He gets his "information" from Breitbart and Alex Jones. The job requires a calm, measured demeanor and diplomatic skills, but he is ridiculously thin-skinned and can't help himself from attacking those who criticize him. Everything I see leads me to believe he'll be worse, possibly far worse, than Carter and Bush.

THAT is why so many people fear that Trump's presidency will be a disaster, not because of the "R" after his name on the ballot.
