Why is Jesus always portrayed as a blue-eyes Caucasian?

According to history (or at least Biblical accounts) Jesus was native to Palestine, Middle East, yet the Northwest is constantly portraying Him as a pale-skinned, blue-eyed Caucasian, who might as well have wandered south from Finland...

Because studios believe no one will go see a movie about Jesus if he looks like Borat.

"Can you keep a secret? Can you know something and never speak of it again?"

reply

Because...when has Hollywood, even supposedly high-brow indy Hollywood been overly concerned with historical accuracy, let alone any type of accuracy when it comes to the Biblical narrative?

reply

Good points so far.

because caucasians buy the majority of the tickets.

P.S. Spell-check wanted me to capitalize the "C" in caucasians... This goes deeper than I thought.

Jesus was white. He grew up in Midwest America and always voted Republican.

Because every culture has interpreted Jesus in their own way. In Africa he is portrayed as a black man, in China as an Asian, and so on. It just so happens that the West makes a lot of movies with this subject matter, so we end up with caucasian Jesus portrayed on film a lot. India and China film industries don't tend to portray this subject. I'm sure if they did we'd have an Indian or Chinese Jesus on the big screen.

While it is likely that Jesus was a swarthy middle-eastern man, Israel is at the cross roads of three major continents and people of all types moved through and lived there. So, really he could be any shade.

Makes sense. Nobody knows for sure what Jesus really looked like...

reply

Jesus on film is based mainly on old depictions of him going back centuries. Like those famous paintings. If Jesus existed, he would have likely had darker skin and short hair. There was a film "COLOR OF THE CROSS" that depicted Jesus as a black man, though I don't appreciate the idea he was crucified because of racism.

At the risk of being redundant (I posted this in another thread), I found this article helpful:

What bothers me the most is the hair. ALWAYS long hair. Where's the more accurate short hair Jesus people?

reply

Jesus was one of these guys in Jewish history and culture who was never supposed to cut his hair, like Sampson. There is a name for that type of person, but I can't think of it. It's like he's dedicated to God.

you are looking for nazirene, and Jesus was definitely not one.
