Yeah...in a sense they're all branching out, which is technically healthier, yet some of them are more irritating than EVER! I think it's basically a case of them just being EXTREMELY self centered.
(Contains SEASON 4 SPOILERS)
Maura is actually coming across the best. She's being a good parent to Ali and a supportive friend to Davina, who's suddenly without a home. This seems like growth to me, as she was very wrapped up in herself and transitioning before (which is natural, I guess, as its an enormous life change that requires a ton of energy and focus.)
I want to throttle Ali. This is actually a pretty brave move on actress/writer Gaby Hoffmann's part, as she's (I think) one of the show runners for this season of the series, which is a hugely influential job as far as input into where the plot goes. I admire that she's not afraid to make her character look bad...but Ali is almost insufferably selfish in Season 4. They must be setting her up to have some big emotional growth spurt (I hope!)
You kind of can't criticize Shelly, as she is just crazy. But at least we're peeling away what helped make her that way (Episode 10 confession)
Josh is just a spoiled baby. I don't care if he was molested, he's just...uggh, about three years old inside. An emotional toddler.
Sarah and Len are the two who seem to be thriving. I have started to feel real affection for them : )
Aunt Bryna is also shaping up nicely. She's warmer and more open than when we saw her last, as I recall.
(I guess looking over that list, they're actually doing better as a group, in general. Ali and Josh -- and to an extent Shelly -- are just becoming so radically annoying that it makes the family seem worse than it is...maybe.)
