Why has this film tanked at the Box Office?

I work in a cinema in the UK where the film opened on New Years Day. We thought it would do well (the Critics are raving about how good it is) but most screenings are either completely empty or only have a couple of customers in them. In fact we are getting a few more customers in for 'Assassin's Creed' which opened the same day. This week we put it into our smallest screen and moved 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' back into a larger screen (from the small screen where A.M.C. is now playing). Even though it opened in November, 'Fantastic Beasts' is nearly always completely sold out.

Kind of sad, it's such a nice movie. Probably because no one wants to watch such a sad movie during the new year period? As it's so depressing. I've only heard about this movie because of the trailer at IMDB, otherwise I wouldn't have even known it's coming out at all, kind of stupid to make a nice movie like this and get stingy on advertising it.

There were about 20 people in the cinema where I watched it last week, and every single one of them was crying. I told my sister in law about it and she thought it was a horror movie originally, and she went to watch it 2 days ago and her eyes were all swollen afterwards from crying. I love J. A. Bayona's movies but I still think the Orphanage is his best.

i wonder if the movie isn't doing better at the box office because word of mouth/reviews revealed how heartbreaking the film is. maybe people aren't in the mood for a sad film about cancer right now?

The idea of a sleeper escapes people?

I think the Title may have put many off....as it nearly did me. Im glad I watched it..good incredible story and a real tear-jerker...

It's a crime that this movie hasn't done well. It's certainly going to finish the year in my top 5.

People generally do not go to the movies to watch something this bad? If you're making a bad movie you need to market it quite a bit so people go see it, ie assassins creed. I went in and left after 10 minutes the movie is just that bad. I even got refunded, not sure what surprised me the most - how bad the movie was or that they actually refunded me.

"I went in and left after 10 minutes the movie is just that bad."

So you didn't actually watch the movie, you just concluded it was bad because it wasn't Transformers. That's retarded, so yeah this movie probably wasn't for you.

I see some sneers to the effect that AMC is too intelligent for modern audiences. But I'd say it's so focused on being "deep" in its ideas that it neglected to give depth to its characters. The story just struck me as rather mechanical and artificial, and left me uninvested in the drama. I didn't feel the pain of the players; I just rolled my eyes at the cliché. This makes for a film that's great in theory but lousy in practice.

Just finished watching it, and it was beautiful! I heard about it from a classmate today and went to find out more as it sounded interesting. It met my expectations so much more so than I imagined. I'm going to have to thank my classmate for hearing about it. It is just so sad it didn't get a better release, more people seeing it.

Perhaps because people run screaming from the theater when they hear Sigourney Weaver's accent?

It is almost as bad as trying to watch the "American" version of Planet Earth she narrated (which wasn't her fault in that case - it was the dumbed down narration).
