What do we really think of this one?

Personally, I really quite liked the first "Samurai Cop" (1991) but this one... Although not as bad as its overall reputation, it is in my opinion an average, middle of the road sequel, with some redeeming value but overall nothing special, 5 out of 10 more or less is what I give it.

While I did sort of liked and appreciate much of the humor and glorious ineptitude of the first, I really thought the story was really muddled in this one and it also tried to take itself seriously at some points whilst being a bit of a parody in other ways, so it was a rather uneven movie too. And there were quite a few parts that really made no sense and were rather distracting, at least the first movie wasn't trying to be "arty" and knew what it really was and thus delivered albeit in its own trashy B-Grade goody action comedy movie sort of way.

And it had some goofs that were really rather obvious and was in many ways an attempt to cash in on the success of the original. And I was rather frustrated by how Fujiyama for instance was supposed to have been dead in the first one returned for the sequel with no explanation. And the facial expressions of lead and other characters almost never changed throughout the movie so the acting felt stiff and unnatural.

But it had some cool shots of the city, some enjoyable moments and some fun action sequences in a no-brainer sort of way. It was like a second Crank movie "Crank 2: High Voltage" (2009) but slightly lesser and more repetitive and silly and not always in a fun way.

So in my opinion not too bad but nothing special, you?

P.S. I didn't really give THAT aspect much thought but I wonder, did you find this movie to be sexist and misogynist as well, with how female characters are treated and also there being more than a few female villains in this, maybe a tiny little bit? Or were you fine with it?

P.S.S. Still, for fans of the first Samurai Cop as well as any Crank movies, Taken films and John Wick movies, its worth a look, but don't expect too much and be prepared to overlook flaws and inconsistencies even if you fully intend to switch your brain off for the whole movie.

Samurai Cop 1 was better. This movie is like other new ironic B movies, where they try too hard to be cheesy and goofy, but as you also say arty, where as the first one was by some guy trying to make a serious movie and failed, and that's where the comedy comes from.
