Why?

She's a terrific athlete, but nobody ever taught her any kind of sportsmanship or respect for her fellow athletes or the discipline that made her famous. She was terrific to watch on the floor, but the minute they shoved the mics in front of her, she was unbearable to watch or listen to. She's so full of herself. And, that's fine, but let's not act like she's come kind of amazing human being, because in reality she is a spoiled little narcissistic princess who was bred since birth to be an Olympic gymnast. I don't care about her personal life. I don't care if she is black or white. I really don't care. I just want to see her grace and technique as an athlete, and beyond that, i don't want to know anything about her or her life story. Why did they make this film?

Wait...it's on Lifetime. Why am i even raising the question?

Why are Caucasian ancestors of US citizens referred to Americans, and Negroid ancestors of US citizens called African-Americans? Until we all agree to be called simply "Americans", do not be surprised by inequality.

As far as the film goes, I'll watch it to learn more about an American athlete.

Because her story is inspirational for children on all races and backgrounds. I dont know how you can get that she was spoiled, she didnt make it where she is today without hard work and dedication. She and her family made lots of sacrifices to achieve her goals. Why not tell her story? It's alot better than those stupid reality shows on Vh1 and Bravo, showing useless people famous for doing nothing.

Here, here, Sweets......very inspirational, I think they did a great job telling her story I'm proud.

This film was made to show all girls they can work hard, and archive their dream, and they do not have to of European background!

BTW, if you want to just watch her technique as an athlete, you could have just Googled her name, and watch the many Youtube videos on her athleticism.

Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common.

The only part of her race thats mentioned in the movie is when she moves to Iowa and says "I didnt realize there were no black people in Iowa"

Maybe they wanted to tell her story because its a story of a girl whose family sacrificed left and right to get her to the Olympics. And frankly its a story of many of the Olympians. the only difference is Gabby is going to be rich afterwards unlike many of the athletes in other sports.

reply

Why? Because it's an inspirational story. What makes you think she's "spoiled"? She had a dream, focus, she had family and later professionals around her who knew she had what it takes to be a champion and they helped her make that happen even to the point of bankruptcy, but many sacrifices WAY before then. Do you not believe in exceptionalism and individualism? Hello-- that's what our Founders believed in (along with other freedoms that aren't part of this discussion). If you live in the USA, you should thank them.
You sound jealous and petty. And your prejudice against Lifetime is telling as well.

Athletes are not politicians, speech writers, sales people or thespians. She is a teen age girl busting her butt. I have never seen her say or do anything disrespectful. She composes herself better than the vast majority of 16-year-olds or many of the other girls playing that day (the Russian girl shoving her coach out of the way, Gabby's teammate rolling her eyes and grimacing at silver). You are as bad as the people calling Sherman a "thug" for what he said. There are a bazillion of films about athletes and athletics. The fact that you are picking on this shows more about you than anything.

newsflash - if people don't care about her story, no one is forcing him to watch. meanwhile, people are watching. smh

It weakens us to not give our enemies the respect they deserve...

If you are referring to Mustafina (Russia) in the AA finals she didn't shove anybody never mind her coach. She had come back from a terrible injury and fell on beam and was so disappointed. Her coach held out his arm and she just moved to the side.

Maloney losing the vault gold was a bit of a brat but she was just disappointed.

They are all only teenage girls and I wouldn't dwell on any behaviour too much. WE only see them for a fraction of their lives and often when they are injured and disappointed. It's the Olympics and they didn't do as well as hoped and they have to suffer their disappointment with millions watching.

I don't know what makes you think she's spoiled. She worked damn hard to get where she is. Anyone who works that hard in ONE department at such a young age is going to have shortcomings in other departments, so give her a break if her personality isn't fully developed yet! She has the rest of her life to work on that though. In the meantime, she can say she's a gold medalist, Olympic athlete and record-breaker! What have you done with your life?

So then why watch a movie titled "The Gabby Douglas Story"? As someone else pointed out you sound very petty and jealous. When you're happy with yourself and your life you won't feel the need to criticize and belittle those who actually reach their goals. I hope you get there.
