Mystique disguising as Stryker in DOFP was completely unrelated to Weapon X

There was a Screenrant article posted a week ago that misinterpreted what Bryan Singer said on Instagram.

It’s refreshingly honest of Singer to admit that the twist was a late addition to the movie and, in all likelihood, this lack of time to reflect on the scene’s true implications is probably the reason it ended up making very little sense. But the rest of Singer’s explanation only partially holds up. Certainly, Mystique’s arc of helping other mutants escape the authorities is continued in Apocalypse and it makes senses that she would want to help Logan, as both characters have suffered greatly as a result of their mutations. However, it still isn’t clear how, despite Mystique’s efforts, Wolverine still ended up being captured by the real Stryker and turned into Weapon X.
Clearly, X-Men fans are left to assume that somewhere between DOFP and Apocalypse, Mystique loses Wolverine (or more likely, he runs away) and Logan continues on his destined course, but the fact that this occurs off-screen renders the X-Men: Days of Future Past twist meaningless, with audiences left guessing Mystique’s true intentions, as well as how she ultimately failed. While Singer’s attempts to clear this plot hole up are definitely appreciated - and somewhat helpful - it still feels like this scene was added purely for shock value, rather than to genuinely further the plot of the franchise.

First off, Singer meant that Mystique was saving Logan from drowning to death. Wolverine in the scene right before that even says he was drowning. He means that it never had anything to do with stopping Logan from entering into the Weapon X program. To think that it did is pretty silly considering that Weapon X did not even exist at the time and Mystique never got any insight into future events, besides the Sentinels wiping mutants.

There seems to be this common misconception that Trask Industries and the Weapon X program are the same thing because they both involve Styker and use mutant for their own gain. In reality they are two separate entities with different end goals. Trask Industries is a robotics company headed by Bolivar Trask, who wants to use mutant powers to enhance his machines’ capabilities. While Weapon X was a secret government funded program founded by William Styker to use mutants as weapons against other mutants after his wife was killed by their mutant son Jason Styker.

Days of Future Past established that Jason had not developed powers and killed his mother yet. Since Styker said that he is almost ten and mutant powers develop during puberty. Trask also mentions that he is eight years from fighting age, pointing out how many of their soldiers were killed during Vietnam, and Styker responses with a worried look on his face. Indicating that he does not want his son to be drafted into a potential war in the future. So Jason has not been imprisoned for killing his mother at this point.

So it’s impossible for Mystique to stop Logan from entering the Weapon X program because she never learned about those future events. She did not know about it’s existence until ten years later in X-Men: Apocalypse. It would have made zero sense if she did stop it.
