Racial BS

I was offended by the racial overtones, although they were presented with some measure of humor. I didn't find it funny or entertaining at all. "Chuy" was presented as a little gangbanger wannabe, dressing and talking like some inner city pachuco. Overall it was a pretty good movie, but, those parts could have been written better without being offensive.

If you watch the scenes that racism can be shown, you see who overcomes both of them..,, Carmen. How? With the truth. In the scene with the dinner table she comes up with facts about dog training for good not for fighting and with Chuy calling him stupid when he calls Mexicans a race. The point of both of these scenes is to show what kind of person Carmen is. She may be a young girl but she carries herself with self respect. Another scene is how Justin disrespected his dad by talking bad about him, and she pointed out he was wrong and you should not disrespect your father ( even though he kicked her out of the house ( because of the way she dressed), and sent her to his Sister In Law ( Chuy's mom)). One thing about Justin's dad is he felt throughout the movie that Justin disrespected him ( and to a large extent he did), and it was something Carmen would not do. If you watch the final scene you see Justin's dad saying hello to Chuy, but not Carmen. That and seeing Carmen ( along with Justin's mom) serving the food ( and wearing a dress), which makes you realize that she is already moved in and has become her home as well. But this goes back to the scene at the dinner table and how she conducted herself. By showing Justin's dad that she knows how to overcome an adverse situation, and act like a young lady, Instead of handling herself like Justin and especially Chuy would, it became easy for Justin's mom to ask him to let her move into the spare room ( his brother's), and knowing he would. It's important to note she liked Carmen from the first time she saw her and walking Max ( and knew she would be a good influence on Justin).

Chuy talking about deportation or any serious issue is not to be taken seriously. Remember Carmen got on him when he called Mexicans a race. One thing I can say about Chuy is he looks better as a character if you see Max more then once. He does save Justin from drowning and starts to understand Emilio is bad

I'm going to ignore all replies to just agree with the OP. The writer tried to make it cool I guess but it came off as corny and contrived

-Chuy riding off and joking about deportation
-Carmen asking the kid if he was expecting to see a maid or whatever when he looked at her
-Off course they have *beep* chihuahuas...

PS ya'll calling the op a wimp are morons. They can have an opinion. The fact that this movie is fictional makes the jokes benign but also really dumb at the same time and unnatural. Think about it, they made the actors say all that or the actors have a self-deprecating insecurity assuming the "gringos" need to hear it doesn't really matter to the movie itself if people in real life joke that way the movie didn't need it. They gave the movie its only stupid dialogue.
