A pleasant surprise

while not a masterpiece of course, i thought this was pretty satisfying. it delivers what you except from the franchise: inventive traps, gore and twists. the cinematography seemed a bit better than in the old installments. but what i liked the most is that the plot works as a standalone sequel and doesn't reference characters or scenes of saw 2-7, which had made those installments so riddled and confusing.

Pretty much every reason you gave is why I think this movie is subpar and a disappointing return for the franchise. It needed something different and new, not the same stuff with just a bit more comedy and lack of connection to the previous movies (most people go to these movies for the connection to the previous ones).

Not to mention the new Jigsaw just isn't interesting enough to carry a franchise on his own.

true, but the reason why "it needed something different and new" (for someone who's already seen all the other movies) is because the previous installments became so repetitive. to anyone who's new to the franchise, i'd recommend watching the original, maybe saw II and then watch this one, instead of sitting through saw 3-7.

That's the problem though is Saw is a franchise that requires you watch the previous movies. I hate how suddenly that's been changed and now it feels like the previous ones don't matter anymore. I don't think the movie is terrible but just like Star Wars The Last Jedi, they tried to subvert expectations and it didn't turn out well and kind of spits in the faces of fans.
