I have a theory

If you saw Mysterious Skin, you remember that kid who believed he was abducted by aliens instead of sexually abused.

Sleep paralysis reminds of what a child must feel when he is sexually abused by a person in his own bed. And you know that many adult survivors of child sexual abuse also suffer from traumatic amnesia. It's such a trauma for a child that his memory may distorted the reality of what he suffered.

Yeah, some people deal with trauma in different ways, but sleep paralysis is a real medical condition that is caused by a lapse in levels of sleep.

Some of the interviewees talk about being molested or abused. They don't go into detail or anything, but it may have contributed to, at the very least, some of the images they were seeing during sleep paralysis. Abuse is not the cause of sleep paralysis, though, since it's mostly biological/chemical although perhaps abuse that's being suppressed made what they saw during sleep paralysis even more extreme than it would normally otherwise be.

This was my theory as well. Almost every person in this alludes mysteriously to some other stuff going on in their lives.

It's hereditary. Every single person in my family experiences it, both parents, siblings and grandparents.....no sexual abuse or trauma whatsoever. My doctor was the one who told me it was hereditary. He also said it shows up on a sleep study for like a second but it sure as hayle don't feel like a second!

It's also linked to narcolepsy!

Yah, I dont think so, I experience it, many people i know have experienced it at least once, just that some people experience it a lot more often. Have you never ever had sleep paralysis? In mexico they call it ¨the dead crawled up on you¨

reply

I have had two episodes of this in my long life. In both, I tried with all my might to scream out for help! that is, for my husband to 'pull me up' out of it! It is terrifying.
