Some slaves did not want to be Freed after Slavery was abolished

I did some reading and found out some slaves stayed with their master after slavery ended. They had nowhere else to go. Some masters didn't abuse their slaves. At least with their master they were guarnteed three meals a day and a roof over their heads.

If you watched Room, you will see that the little boy who was born and grew up living in that small room, often wanted to go back to it. It was familiar - it was all he knew. Unlike his mother who knew what it was to be free and live in a house. Slaves who were born slaves - that is all they knew unlike Kunta who was born free.

the problem was that after living a life of slavery, they were suddenly given their freedom. It sounded great on paper, but it couldn't have been ideal. They wouldn't get work elsewhere, its not like any of them expected to be a doctor or lawyer. Now they had to pay for food and shelter as well. It must have seemed easier to continue living the life they were born into. Also, after the end of slavery, there weren't any rehabilitation plans for former slaves, they were left to fend for themselves. Sad, really to celebrate freedom, but then immediately start thinking that slavery, although an outrage, provided security and stability.
