Any other space sci-fi series as good as this?

I've nearly finished season 1, and short of reading the books (which I'm intending to do), am somewhat at a loss for a good sci-fi series that can match it to watch next. To me it's the best sci-fi on TV since Battlestar Galactica (leaving aside the later seasons of that one).

Can anybody recommend anything else that comes close to The Expanse? Not really interested in "Adventure of the week" style space operas.

Babylon 5. Season 1 is a bit flaky, but stick with it and it's the best space-opera ever made.

Lord of the Rings in space.

FAST n BULBOUS!

Anothar vote for Babylong 5, AFAIC the best SciFi serie evar made. All the more so because the first couple seasons were weak, but necessary to set the stage for the magnificent last 3 seasons. It definitely went out on a high note. Am verra encouraged to see othars here comparing The Expanse to it.

You can check out 'Dark Matter' from the recent stuff.

Why yes. The Expense isnt even that strong of a show.

And its not actual sci-fi, its mostly a crime story. Because we lack in those. All these douzen of cop shows etc needed just one more.

Thus plenty of shows are as good or better. Like all the classics:

Doctor Who
Star Trek
Blakes 7
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Stargate SG-1
Stargate: Atlantis
Babylon 5
Firefly/Serenity
Futurama
Battlestar Galactica (of course only the 2004 version)
Dark Matter (thats actually a lot like this show)

That's not helpful, since you're not adapting your recommendations at all to what was requested. First of all, you don't get to just dismiss the fact that the author thinks The Expanse is some of the best sci-fi ever made, and secondly you could've refrained from recommending heavily "adventure of the week" styled shows like Star Trek, Stargate or Futurama (which is a sci-fi comedy animation for crying out loud).

reply

Yeah, just throw in any sci-fi title you know without listening to what OP actually is asking. Meaningless list.

Of ones currently on TV I'd say check out Orphan Black. Great show about clones. Helps if you don't mind some feminist undertones.

The lead actress is Tatiana Maslany who finally won her Emmy for playing 11 clones give or take.

Take that under consideration, as it may be a first, A sci-fi show winning for best actress. How often do you see sci-fi get that kind of respect? All due to the actress.

Plus it has good action, humor and a fast paced story. If you chose to watch it, make sure you at least watch the first 3-5 episodes as some people take that long to get the full story set up. I was hooked from the first scene, but again, it takes about 5 episodes to get the full back story, plus episode 4 is the first one clone(played by Tat) impersonating another clone(played by Tat) that shows the extent of Tatiana's acting expertise and you will agree that she should have won all the Emmy's. Sixth episode she flipped it with another cone impersonating a clone scene that was hilarious and a bit of slapstick too.

First couple of years she did not get nominated and twitter went ballistic, third year finally a nom but not a win, and finally, 4th year she won.

I've seen a lot of people mentioning Firefly/Serenity & ST DS9 (all of which I love) but haven't seen anyone mentioning Farscape. I think you can watch it on Netflix (last I checked). It's older but it's got great characters, story, and such imaginative aliens (puppets).

For a cheesy bit of fun from back in the day, check out UFO (1970).  
