Why shoot the horse after it was mated with the black stallion? It seemed the ego of the man couldn't handle being embarrassed. That's the only reason I can think of.

That's the way the film was written - yes, his ego was hurt by the incident watched by the neighbours. Humans do a lot of nasty things because of their egos!

I don't understand this at all. How does killing an innocent (and obviously extremely-loved to boot) animal in any way mitigate his shame? Not that his shame made any sense in the first place. So confusing.

It was purely out of shame and because his mare had been impregnated.
