Full of horror cliches and uninspired

More demanding fans of the genre, can not feel but disappointed.
Just about any horror cliche is in Welp:
a) set in the woods (Friday the 13th anyone or a dozen other slashers?)
b) with a leatherface mask villain (Texas Chainsaw Massacre anyone... surely an hommmage)
c) and the sexy blonde gets tied up to a meat hook (...)

Welp is so hyped because Belgium Taxshelter money is in it, so it can benefit from funds out of crowd sourcing as well as evaded tax money (read: a lot of promotion).

And of course you also get a bunch of professional journalists who pose as objective reviewers (and who get invited to fancy receptions, hence... if you don't write positive about this movie, you will not be invited in the future).

Welp can benefit from a decent budget for a slasher horror flick, so the production looks good, but this does not make it a good movie. It has all been done before and much better. I was hoping that the blonde would show her tits, but obviously this probably would have hampered with the 12 + certificate it has now. If she would have shown her tits, well then at least just about any horror cliche would have been in it.

Look I understand what you're saying, but this is a bit of a clincher.

People are able to enjoy things that have been done before and better, and why not...if we are only allowed to enjoy the "best of the best", we'd all still be watching Citizen Kane [or insert some other classic that you like].

Too bad about them tits though :)

Speaking only for myself, if a Horror film is gonna be cliched' and "been there/done that", I'm a lot more tolerant in my rating of it if it has the good sense to at least include some gratuitous female nudity.

So...it sounds like I can scratch this one off my "to see" list.

"You may think that...I couldn't possibly comment."

i thought the movie was pretty good. it sounds like the OP is ONLY going by what he/she saw in the trailer. for people who have actually seen the movie (unlike the R-Clercx) they know it's a pretty decent watching.

reply

I don't really mind if the story is cliche or unoriginal, but is it well done?
And how is the acting?

reply

Screw these guys, they either havn't seen it, or don't know anything about real horror classics.

The movie was freaking awesome, the music, the pacing, it was basically a revamped Giallo film, even the cops ringtone was the score for Susperia.

It's a must see for anybody that isn't from the "Saw' Generation.

reply

I'm going to go with my instinct and trust you over these guys lol.
Because I know that a few of them have rated Clown 2014 an 8/10 and then insulted my taste when I called it a bad film.
I'll give it a shot tonight :-)

reply

Yeah, I haven't seen Clown yet, but I'll at least try to watch movies, even if they are rated low. One mans hell is anothers paradise, LOL.

As far as Welp is concerned, I thought it was a good movie. The camera work alone made it good, full of actual 'real' lens flares, as the light came down through the trees.
Nowadays most people put CGI flares in their movies(JJ Abrams).
The music reminded me of a Goblin score from an 80's Italian flick.
There were scenes that had no dialogue, and i9t didn't need any. Sometimes it's nice to just let the movie tell the story with the camera. Everybody is always filling their script with the 'as you know' exposition, dumbing down the audience.

Of course, me too that's why I gave Clown a shot lol.
But I would still recommend it, since it would seem the majority of viewers liked it.
It had a 5.7 when I watched and now, I believe it has a 6.0.
So, give it a shot!
It's not the worst film ever. It just didn't do a lot for me.
There is gore but gore isn't what I look for in horror films.
For me, it is more about the atmosphere and tension. Soundtrack/score is also important.
Clown, to me was just cheesy and silly and I felt it should have just been a comedy, since I couldn't take it seriously at all.
But like you said
One mans hell is anothers paradise

reply

You love atmosphere and tension, eh? When was the last time you watched The Exorcist III? I only ask because I think it's one of the most underrated horror movies there is, and it's nothing but tension and creepy atmosphere.

reply

I re watched Exorcist 3 a few months ago actually.
I agree, underrated horror film and very creepy.

reply

don't know anything about real horror classics.

hahaha the good ol' if you don't have the same taste as me, you don't know anything/didn't understand the movie line.

reply

Has nothing to do with knoweldge or taste. It's simply a matter of what you are
used to. If you grew up with the old B&W horror classics, then you are most likely
to enjoy movies that are like Welp. If you are younger and only know movies with
quick, flashy editing and lots of gore, then this movie probably isn't for you.
Yes I am generalizing a bit, but I am just trying to make a point.
Oh, and if that is your real photo as your avatar, you are very pretty. (Just saying)

reply

It's me and thank you :)

You are very welcome ;)

Oh, and that pic is me, but with a crazy photo shopped beard. Maybe its time for a change?

What do you think of this one?

reply

This is far from being a giallo and far from resembling Suspiria in any way, shape or form. Sure the director might like Argento, but here the score is the closest you'll get to that.
I found this film to be well done, but generic. Can you enjoy it? Sure. I can't think of anything that would make me want to watch this one again.
I don't need the film to listen to the score, which was good.

reply

Well, I'd say only one of those cliches actually applies here. First off, a horror film set in the woods doesn't immediately make it a cliche. In this particular case, it was actually crucial to the plot of the film, as opposed to others, where it's just an excuse to isolate a bunch of people, and to explain why there are never any other people around to help.

The "leatherface" mask villain doesn't have a "leatherface" mask... So you can pretty much throw that one out the window. The mask is wood, as opposed to skin, and is carved to resemble some kind of feral animal. You can call a killer in a mask a cliche if you want, but your really narrowing the field for originality then.

And as far as the blond tied to a hook... Well, you can definitely link that one to Texas Chainsaw, but I wouldn't call it a cliche exactly. I think it was intentional, so I'll let it slide.

For the most part, I thought it was a fine horror flick. A bit disappointing, yes, but not for the reasons you listed. It had an interesting premise: The feral-child killer, hunting a group of cub scouts in the woods. That could've been great! It just seemed to play it safe. That said, I wouldn't call this movie cliched. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's still more original than anything else I've seen recently.

reply

The film self-reflexively reproduces horror cliches for the purposes of irony and humor. Whether you dig this or not, of course is up to you. I dug it. Especially the last shot of the opening sequence, which signals something different is up with the usual "WOMAN RUNNING THROUGH THE WOODS AT NIGHT OPENING SEQUENCE" cliche.

I think this is a clever and enjoyable film.

reply

yeah, just finished watching the movie, was rather suprised how good it was.
don't really follow the OP in this. It seems he's more a hater, don't know why maybe he knows some actors in it and hate's them :) dont know

reply

I had rather high hopes regarding this movie, but yeah, it turned out to be a very stereotypical (and pointless) slasher. I was hoping Kai to be something more than just a miniature Leatherface, blah.

reply

Nothing wrong with "clichés" in horror films as long as it seems genuine and fits in naturally with the story.

There's not an infinite amount of stuff you can do.

Not an infinite amount of stories to tell.

Sheit's gonna overlap.

There we were, minding our own business, when kids started killing themselves all over my property.

You're an idiot.

Thank you.
